Is Caffeine Free Coffee Less Acidic?
Coffee enthusiasts take great pleasure in sharing a cup with family or friends every day or part of a social event, whether as part of their daily ritual or social experience. A delicious cup can provide energy boost or help focus and concentrate, yet for some individuals the acidic properties in coffee may cause heartburn and GERD; thus leading them to seek a low acid option instead. Luckily, it’s still possible to enjoy an aromatic beverage without suffering an acidic stomach sensation!
Acidity in coffee depends on a number of factors, including its type and variety, temperature and time of brewing and how it’s extracted. Cold water steeping allows various compounds in coffee to extract more slowly thus decreasing acid production; similarly cold brew generally has less acid than traditional hot brewed coffee brewed under similar circumstances.
There are also coffees with naturally lower acidity levels in their beans themselves, depending on bean type and region. This may be a result of growing them in cooler climates or using decaffeination techniques to remove caffeine from their beans.
Now more than ever before there are options for those seeking low acid coffee that they can drink regularly, with decaf and herbal blends such as chicory, dandelion and barley and rye coffee proving particularly suitable options that don’t irritate stomachs and have similar savory flavours to traditional coffee drinks.
