Is Nespresso Healthy Coffee?
Coffee in the morning can do more than satisfy tastebuds – it can also provide energy boosts and promote good digestion, as well as potential health benefits including heart health, physical performance and mood enhancement. In this article we’ll investigate if Nespresso coffee pods contain caffeine as well as any additional nutrients which might provide benefits to our wellbeing.
How Much Caffeine Is Found in Nespresso Pods? Pod coffee has grown increasingly popular (Euromonitor, 2017), yet reliable data on its caffeine content are scarce. Therefore, this study’s goal was to produce accurate and up-to-date caffeine estimates for Nespresso capsule coffees; two serve sizes were evaluated; comparison was made against manufacturer values.
Nespresso capsules were found to contain on average 40 mg*serve-1 caffeine, significantly lower than that found in commercial espresso coffee samples (Desbrow et al., 2012). Although intra-drink variations do occur within Nespresso pod range, such variance is unlikely to influence an individual’s caffeine consumption.
Caffeine should be consumed in moderation; adults should limit themselves to no more than 400mg of caffeine each day, equivalent to approximately 2-3 cups of regular brewed coffee (8oz). Nespresso pods don’t contain cholesterol due to being made from coffea plants; however, some varieties may contain added sugar so always read through your packaging for ingredients before buying!
Nespresso pods offer an ideal solution for individuals with lactose intolerance as most varieties don’t contain milk or any dairy products; however, there are a few varieties which do include regular or plant-based milk for those who would like their coffee with milk; there are even lactose-free varieties available so as to meet more people with intolerances.
Nespresso pods’ caffeine content depends on the types of beans used; Arabica has less caffeine than Robusta beans, with light roasts having lower levels than dark ones. Blends and varieties within one capsule may also have an impactful impact on this measurement.
