Can I Add Reishi Mushroom Powder to My Coffee?
Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) are well-known health boosters on the market, famed for their anti-aging and immune boosting benefits. Many believe reishi powder can reduce stress, fatigue, energy levels and improve sleep among other advantages; you can add it to beverages such as coffee, tea, juice or smoothies or find it in skincare serums and other skincare products for additional support.
Reishi extract contains adaptogenic compounds that may help the body adapt to both internal and environmental stress, according to a 2021 study published in Molecular Nutrition and Food Research. Mushrooms provide antioxidants, protein, vitamins and minerals – including vitamin D – as well as anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.
Reishi is generally safe for most people, though long-term use can have side effects. According to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center reports, some may experience itchy skin, blood in their stool and stomach discomfort as a result. Furthermore, FDA does not mandate testing on all products before selling them for sale.
Crowe recommends only using high-quality ingredients when adding reishi mushroom powder to coffee, like procuring it from a reliable provider and taking small doses (two teaspoons daily) every day. Also, for optimal results he suggests storing it in the fridge to ensure its freshness and potency.
Other types of mushroom extracts – cordyceps, chaga and lion’s mane among them-can also help enhance the health benefits of your morning cup of coffee. They can help soften its bitter flavor while providing nutritional and herbal support; maitake and chaga can regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels while reishi could bolster heart strength*.
