Note: Although organic certification may not always be feasible, some coffees cannot use pesticides early in their growing process to combat Roya, an infectious plant rust disease common to Ethiopia and Central America. In these instances, purchasing directly from local farms that offer direct trade can provide more reliability than organic certification alone.
Though organic coffee’s advantages are evident, many still choose not to purchase it due to its higher cost; this often happens due to cost being double of regular coffee. If you can find an organic fair trade coffee product instead, however, then its worth the price for both you and the farmer.
