Halal is an Arabic term meaning something permissible for Muslims to do, consume or do without harming the body. Many Muslims ask if coffee and caffeine are permissible under Islamic law; the answer is generally yes if no forbidden ingredients or excessive quantities cause drunkenness or cause drunkenness. Wine coffee cannot be seen as permissible since its name contains the word “wine”.

Coffee was considered sinful and forbidden under Kha’ir Beg, ruler of Mecca in 1511 CE, as well as during Ottoman rule in Constantinople and Cairo due to beliefs that drinking it might lead to radical thinking that purist Muslim scholars considered harmful at that time.

However, coffee consumption was legalized again when Mufti Mehmet Ebussuud el-Imadi issued a fatwa in 1524 allowing its consumption. This decision was taken because Ottoman government authorities feared that banning coffee may spark rebellious Islamic factions to organize and plan against their rule if banned – therefore lifting its ban was made as a precautionary measure in order to avoid such an outcome.
