Ganoderma is a double-walled basidiomycete fungus with fruiting bodies that produce spores. Ganoderma has long been used as a medicinal herbal medicine in traditional Chinese medicine to strengthen spirits, reinvigorate spleen function, replenish Qi reserves and restore reserves. Ganoderma provides vital nutrients and phytochemicals such as amino acids, fatty acids, nucleosides, steroids, alkaloids polypeptides enzymes with wide ranging bioactive activities including anti-ageing properties; antiglycemic, antioxidant, immunomodulatory, hepatoprotective and neuroprotective properties.

G. lucidum mycelia and fruiting bodies contain polysaccharides, glycoproteins, proteins, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, nucleosides, sterols, lectins and fatty acid derivatives among many other chemical components that have various biological activities such as being cytotoxic, hepatoprotective, antihypertensive, hypocholesterolemic, antihistaminic, antiinflammatory hypoglycemic or even antiangiogenic. G. lucidum contains over 200 types of triterpenoids, including an abundance of tetracyclic triterpenes, in its mycelia and fruiting bodies, research has demonstrated this fact. This effect was attributable to its ability to decrease malondialdehyde levels, increase antioxidant enzyme levels and suppress inflammatory mediators; further evidence for mycelium fermented liquid’s protective ability is its ability to prevent alcohol-induced hepatitis in mice.

G. lucidum has also been proven to boost host immune function, including both innate and adaptive immunity, by increasing CD3+ lymphocyte counts and CD4/CD8 ratio. Studies conducted on animal models demonstrated both its antidiabetic activity as well as mild hypoglycemic effect, likely attributable to its high content of leucine which interacts with insulin. Studies have also demonstrated that combining G. lucidum with chemotherapy significantly increased survival rates among cancer patients; however, further investigation should be undertaken to assess its efficacy for treating cancer in humans. Results indicate that this innovative therapy may be effective against hepatocellular carcinoma in combination with standard chemotherapy; however, further investigation must be conducted to see whether this approach is applicable against other cancers as well.
