Is Mushroom Tea Healthy?
Mushroom tea has quickly emerged as an alternative to coffee and green juice, yet does it live up to its hype? Backed by scientific studies, mushroom tea may well live up to expectations; studies have demonstrated its ability to strengthen immunity, decrease inflammation, and even slow aging processes.
Mushrooms are an excellent source of beta-glucans, polysaccharide-based soluble fibres which have been shown to support normal immune function and activate cells involved in immunity response, according to Robin Foroutan, MS, RDN, owner of Nutrition by Robin in Scottsdale Arizona. They also contain ergothioneine which may protect brain against oxidative stress and neurodegeneration.
Mushrooms are an excellent addition to a healthy diet due to their naturally low caloric content and nutritional benefits, making them a wonderful source of extra energy, digestion support and immune strengthening. A study published by Journal of Clinical Immunology demonstrated this phenomenon by finding people who consumed mushroom tea experienced stronger immunity responses, less stress/anxiety levels and better focus and concentration resulting in improved sleep quality.
Tea made with mushrooms typically features earthy, subtle flavours with subtle, grounding tones. Their adaptationogenic qualities may help relieve stress while simultaneously balancing hormones through adaptogenic effects (reishi or chaga are among many examples), yet these powerful healing herbs should always be consumed responsibly and with care.
Foroutan notes the importance of choosing a high-quality mushroom product made from its entirety to maximize benefits. She advises opting for one which has been brewed at an ideal temperature and undergone sufficient processing to soften chitin cell walls in its cells, making the soluble fibres easier for consumers to digest while still protecting bioactive compounds present.
Though mushroom tea comes in various forms – capsules, tinctures and herbal drinks – its most well-known use is as an herbal beverage. Mushroom tea is traditionally prepared by steeping dried or whole mushrooms in hot water or dissolving mushroom powder into liquid. You can drink it alone or combine it with ingredients such as green or yerba mate tea to customize its effects.
As with any supplement, it is advised that before including mushroom tea as part of your daily routine it be discussed with your healthcare provider, particularly if taking prescription drugs or have any preexisting health conditions or concerns – some mushrooms such as Reishi can interfere with blood thinners and cause hemophilic bleeding to worsen, so make sure your physician knows if you experience these side effects.
