Full Moon Party at Bomba Shack
One of the world’s premier Full Moon Parties takes place every year on Tortola’s northwest shore at Bomba Shack, an extravagant beach bar comprised of junk piled upon itself and decorated with bras and panties.
The bar serves mushroom tea, made up of psilocybin and other chemicals found in psychedelic mushrooms – unlike marijuana, which is illegal here (even though even a trace can land you in jail as a continental).
What to Expect
The Full Moon Party at Bomba Shack should be on every traveller’s itinerary when visiting British Virgin Islands. Held only during full moon nights, this wild and hedonistic gathering draws crowds from across the globe for drinks, dancing and celebration.
Bomba Shack is a unique beach bar known for hosting full moon parties. Built entirely out of random objects found along the coastline, its walls are decorated with bras and panties autographed by visitors and Sharpie-scribbled graffiti from visitors; as well as bras signed by visitors with autographs from visitors as well as Sharpie graffiti that creates its distinctive appearance.
Bomba Shack quickly became an overnight success upon its debut. Both locals and tourists could come together under the full moon to dance to reggae beats while enjoying Bomba’s signature mushroom tea, which may or may not have hallucinogenic properties depending on whom you ask.
Since then, other venues around the BVI’s have hosted these parties, most notably at Paradise Club in Cane Garden Bay where either live music or DJ sets play while glow sticks, body paint, and plenty of alcohol flow freely.
Foxy’s Taboo on Jost Van Dyke hosts full moon parties as well, but unfortunately was destroyed by Hurricane Irma and has yet to reopen after repairs are completed – be sure to check for events prior to going as these may not take place every night!
Ingredients
Bomba Shack hosts one of the wildest Full Moon Parties around. I attended one while sailing around the islands in 2010 and had an unforgettable time; their delicious rum punch was delicious, the atmosphere lively and fun; this experience should definitely be done once in your lifetime!
Bomba’s is not for the faint of heart or children, but it offers an unforgettable experience. Situated in Cappoons Bay on Tortola’s west side, Bomba’s is like something out of Salvador Dali paintings come to life – its lean-to structure made out of beach debris held together with rubber bands made out of women’s undergarment shackled together using unmentionables as rubber bands and bungee cords; drawing crowds every month around full moon when free psychedelic mushroom tea is offered!
Although not a traditional West Indian beach party, the Bomba Shack offers fantastic views of Jost Van Dyke and Tortola from its eclectic bar/party spot. A DJ provides musical entertainment while there is a good selection of rum punch. Mucko Jumbies on stilts add festive flare while big round metal sculptures filled with wood are set ablaze for added drama and fireworks are set off over Trellis Bay instead for its Fool Moon Party.
Preparation
Full moon parties have long been a tradition in the British Virgin Islands (BVIs). Although Bomba’s shack was damaged by hurricanes and its future is uncertain, there are still numerous places on Tortola to celebrate under its full moon skies.
Bomba’s beach bar on Capoons Bay, constructed of beach detritus and decorated with bras and panties of reckless partygoers, is perhaps most famous. He hosts monthly full moon parties and offers generous amounts of free psychedelic mushroom tea.
Mushrooms used in Bomba’s tea are grown locally on the island, typically after heavy rainstorms. Locals also make stronger and more potent versions that they sell locally than the one found at Bomba’s. One study suggests ER’s are busier on full moon nights due to either people getting drunker than normal driving around recklessly, or something else altogether.
Drinking
Bomba’s Mushroom Tea can be enjoyed at every Full Moon Party, making for an exciting beverage made of rum, milk and mushrooms that’s ideal for sipping shot by shot or with ice. Drink it together for maximum fun without getting drunk.
Bomba’s Shack offers fantastic full moon parties, but guests should be wary that these events may become messy. Therefore, it is recommended to wear light clothing and bring a hat or umbrella for protection, along with water and food to stay hydrated throughout your experience.
Full Moon Parties in Tortola offer an enjoyable way to mark the close of each lunar cycle. Lasting until dawn, these celebrations include music, drinking and fireworks – most famously at Bomba Shack on Carpoons Bay on Tortola’s north side – constructed out of tons of debris washed ashore; its walls feature colorful Polaroids of visitors as well as bras in various states of disrepair.
At odds with law, psychedelic mushrooms are legal in the BVIs while smoking cannabis could land you in jail and lead to instant deportation for continentals. As an alternative, special mushroom tea served at full moon parties has proven itself safe while potentially hallucinogenic.
Although Bomba’s Shack was destroyed by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, other beach bars have continued the tradition of full moon parties with their own special flair. Trellis Bay is a favorite due to its relaxed vibes and live music; Mucko Jumbies on stilts add to the festive atmosphere, as do metal wood sculptures set ablaze! These family friendly beach parties.
