Coffee’s status as a halal beverage remains a matter of debate, with some insisting it is forbidden while others believe otherwise. When determining whether coffee meets these criteria or not, several key considerations must be met: the beans must come from sources approved as halal; secondly, its production process should exclude non-halal ingredients; finally all supporting materials must comply.
Coffee’s halal status depends heavily on its preparation method and ingredients used. To maintain its halal status, all beans used must be certified halal while any non-halal substances like sugar or milk must not enter into its making process. Furthermore, all emulsifiers used during brewing must also come from animal sources that adhere to Islamic Law; look out for drinks which list both their ingredients and brewing method on their packaging for assurance of halal certification.
