Paper filters are the go-to filter choice, thanks to their affordable price point and user friendliness. Their accessibility also means they’re an easy choice for almost every brewing device on the market – and come in both bleached and unbleached variants – the former using harsh chemical bleaching processes while unbleached ones use eco-friendly oxygen bleaching processes instead.
No matter which filter you purchase, both bleached and unbleached filters will effectively remove grounds from your cup. But for an overall healthier option, unbleached filters might be better, since they lack chemicals that could adversely impact the beverage you’re creating. However, unbleached filters may release woody paper fibers during brewing, potentially diminishing flavor significantly; to reduce this possibility simply pre-wet your filter with some water before beginning your brew session.

Cloth coffee filters may be more expensive than other filters, but they offer superior flavor for your brew. Not only are they easily cleanable but you can find linen and cotton cloth filters. Paper filters tend to leak more often while cloth filters retain oil that adds an enhanced flavour profile that paper simply doesn’t offer.
Metal filters are another popular choice because they do not retain any oils from your beverage, yet can become easily clogged up over time. Furthermore, some find the metallic flavor off-putting.
