Can You Save Mushroom Tea?
Mushroom tea, made by steeping mushrooms in hot water, has become an increasingly popular drink to increase energy and cognitive function. But does the promise live up to the hype? We consulted registered dietitians who provided insight into its benefits (and drawbacks).
Mushroom Tea Mushroom tea is an enjoyable way of enjoying mushrooms and is typically made by mixing ground or whole dried mushrooms with hot water, creating a tea. Psilocybin mushrooms (commonly referred to as magic mushrooms) are commonly used due to their psychedelic effects; however, other types can also be used depending on desired effect. Mushroom tea offers an enjoyable way of experiencing these effects while potentially reaping various health benefits like immune system support and mental clarity enhancement.
Mushroom tea typically uses lion’s mane mushrooms (known as hou tou gu or yamabushitake) which have a sweet-tart flavor, although other functional fungi such as reishi, turkey tail and chaga may also be included as these functional fungi may help alleviate stressors in both body and mind. These functional fungi may possess adaptogenic properties which reduce its negative impacts.
Mushroom tea’s primary advantage lies in its abundance of antioxidants. Antioxidants are natural substances produced in our bodies that defend against free radical damage caused by free radicals; such as premature aging or chronic illnesses like heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Polysaccharides and ergothioneine found in mushrooms may also help support immunity while protecting against oxidative stress according to Robin Foroutan, MS, RDN, HHC from Nutrition by Robin.
Foroutan suggests starting small when drinking mushroom tea to prevent stomach distress and diarrhea. Gradually work up to drinking one or two cups daily over the course of a few weeks; adding milk will further mask its strong mushroom taste while providing extra nutritional benefits like proteins, calcium, potassium and vitamins B1 and C.
Mushrooms not only add flavor and nutrition, but can also offer additional health benefits when combined with certain herbs and spices such as ginger, turmeric, peppercorns, juniper berries or cinnamon. When making mushroom tea for yourself next time, experiment by adding different combinations to discover which combination tastes and feels best to you.
