Does Mushroom Coffee Reduce Inflammation?
Mushroom coffee has gained in popularity, yet there’s little scientific support for some of its health claims. In particular, those that claim it can reduce inflammation have not been independently verified. Other claimed health benefits of mushroom coffee include anti-aging properties, cholesterol level reduction, supporting brain function enhancement and helping with weight loss. Furthermore, some research indicates it could reduce cancer and autoimmune diseases risk as well.
Medicinal mushrooms have long been an integral component of traditional Chinese medicine, offering numerous antioxidants and plant compounds that are believed to support immune health. Furthermore, medicinal mushrooms contain anti-inflammatory properties and may even help improve sleep quality – one popular type used in mushroom coffee is known as the “Lion’s Mane Mushroom,” which has also been linked with enhanced cognitive performance.
However, it’s important to keep in mind that not all mushrooms possess equal medicinal qualities and that when processed into coffee form most of their beneficial properties may be lost. Not all mushrooms are safe for consumption either; some used in mushroom coffee could even cause digestive issues. According to The Cleveland Clinic, anyone considering adding mushroom coffee as part of their diet should carefully read through ingredient lists if they suffer from kidney problems or have trouble digesting grains; also bear in mind some medicinal mushrooms contain high oxalates content which could cause kidney stones.
Mushroom coffee comes in powder form and should be mixed with hot water just like instant coffee, while some brands also sell ground versions that can be brewed like regular coffee. There are various mushroom coffee recipes online which you can follow to make the beverage at home; start slowly to avoid an upset stomach or adverse reactions.
Reishi, lion’s mane and chaga mushrooms are often the key components of mushroom coffees. According to reports, these mushrooms are packed with essential vitamins B2, B5, C, E and K; copper potassium and phosphorus as well as other minerals such as manganese. All these nutrients play an essential role in blood circulation, healthy skin and bones health as well as improving sleep quality. Proponents of mushroom coffee also claim that adaptogens contained within them help regulate cortisol (the stress-inducing hormone) production during times of stress to regulate cortisol (and improve sleep quality).
However, more research needs to be conducted in order to assess the health effects of mushroom coffee and ascertain if it has the potential to be an alternative to regular caffeine-containing beverages. Although adaptogens found in mushrooms have been shown to decrease stress and anxiety levels, it remains unknown whether these benefits are experienced when drinking mushroom coffee itself. It’s always advisable when adding new foods and supplements into one’s diet, to first consult a registered dietitian so they can assess your individual needs before suggesting ways of including mushroom coffee for inflammation or other health benefits into your routine.
