Ganoderma lucidum, commonly referred to as red reishi or the ‘King of Mushrooms’ is an adaptogen with numerous health-promoting properties that has been used for over 2000 years in Traditional Chinese Medicine to strengthen immunity. Red Reishi can help balance both blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as promote overall wellbeing by acting as an anti-oxidant and helping the body defend itself against infections.

Reishi fungus is unique in that it grows on both living and dead wood, often found at the bases of trees in tropical regions of Asia such as rainforests. At ORGANO, we use only high-grade Reishi from Wuyi Mountains of China’s Fuzhou region – it’s used in Traditional Chinese Medicine too!

Reishi contains numerous health-promoting compounds, including polysaccharides, triterpenoids, nucleotides, steroids, proteins/peptides and fatty acids. Reishi is also a source of amino acids and has demonstrated many of the same health-promoting activities found in other medicinal mushrooms, including antitumour, immunomodulatory and antioxidant activities1.1

G. lucidum has been shown in numerous preclinical and clinical studies to possess powerful antitumour properties, including its ability to reduce tumor growth while inhibiting angiogenesis – the process by which cancerous cells spread throughout the body – as well as improve immunity functions that have typically been compromised by chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

Reishi was recently demonstrated to significantly lower the rate at which cancer cells metastasised to other parts of the body in human tumour cell lines and mouse models of melanoma and leukaemia, as well as showing promise against prostate, pancreatic, and breast cancers. Furthermore, research also suggests reishi could potentially be useful in treating other forms of cancer such as prostate cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer and more.

G. lucidum not only provides immune-enhancing polysaccharides, but it also secretes enzymes capable of breaking down cellulose and lignin found in plant materials – something which could prove valuable in terms of biomass utilization, fibre bleaching or organo-pollutant degradation.

Studies have also demonstrated that water-soluble 1,3-b- and 1,6-b-glucans from G. lucidum are potent immunomodulatory compounds, capable of increasing antibody production and dendritic cell phagocytosis by immature dendritic cells. Furthermore, these b-glucans increase gene expression associated with immune function such as cell differentiation, innate immunity and autophagy1.1
