How to Make and Preserve Mushroom Tea
Many experienced psychonauts have transitioned from eating mushrooms and truffles directly to drinking mushroom tea for several reasons, including taste-friendly convenience, reduced nausea, and larger dosages being taken at once. This article covers how to create mushroom tea at home as well as tips on extending its effects for longer.
Mushroom tea can be created from any edible mushroom; oysters, shiitake and more delicate varieties such as enoki or lion’s mane work well. We suggest cutting your shrooms into small pieces so they have more surface area and infuse into the water more quickly. If they’re too large to cut easily with a knife then chop them up in your blender for easier results!
Before beginning to make mushroom tea, it’s essential to pre-dry your mushrooms. Arrange them on a piece of cardboard or dry towel and spread evenly across its surface before moving it to a dry, ventilated space out of direct sunlight – with or without fan support if possible – then check back every so often until their appearance changes to something that feels rubbery when touched – signaling readiness for preservation.
If you cannot pre-dry your mushrooms, microwaves and ovens may also work; however, this method does not retain psilocybin as effectively.
No microwave or oven should be used; doing so will destroy many vitamins and minerals found in mushrooms, so take care not to overcook. After your mushrooms have been pre-dried, they need to be placed into a brine solution containing 3% salt brine in an adequate jar, with something heavy such as garlic cloves cut lengthwise (we use head of garlic cut crossways or peppercorns as weight) that keeps the mushrooms under liquid (we usually use crossways cut garlic head or peppercorns as weights). Once in brine solution jar, place all mushrooms together into brine solution and keep weighted so the mushrooms stay submerged under liquid (we use head of garlic cut crossways as weights).
Once your brine solution is prepared, pour it over your mushrooms in your jar and pack them tightly enough that they are completely covered by it. Place a weight on top to prevent them from floating to the surface and losing some of their psilocybin content. You may wish to add dried thyme leaves, cinnamon sticks or star anise for additional flavour if desired.
Once ready, your mushroom tea should be ready to enjoy. Feel free to experiment by adding honey or sugar as desired for added sweetness; or adding other herbs and spices such as lemon zest, sage, rosemary, turmeric or ginger for additional flavouring. When pouring the tea out into cups for consumption it is advised that sediment stays at the bottom to avoid unwanted particles entering your drink.
