Is Beer Healthier Than Coffee?
Beer is one of the most beloved beverages in America, so it makes sense that people might wonder whether drinking this alcoholic beverage can actually be healthier than coffee. Unfortunately, no. Beer and other alcoholic beverages do not contribute to weight gain and other health problems; in fact, they contain calories which could potentially contribute to weight gain and even further harm your body.
Many consumers with health in mind have given up drinking alcohol altogether as part of an overall plan to lose weight and improve their wellbeing, however some individuals still enjoy moderate alcohol consumption; choosing a suitable brew could help you stay in good shape!
Studies have linked sugary drinks, such as beer, to America’s obesity crisis. Furthermore, an increasing number of Americans are developing diabetes, a serious health condition requiring close monitoring and medical management.
Beer contains many nutritious ingredients such as brewer’s yeast, barley and malt that may provide numerous health benefits; however, its caloric intake must still be considered before drinking a serving size of it. A 12-ounce bottle typically provides about 150-calories. Light beers have even lower caloric loads.
As a rule of thumb, alcohol contains approximately 7 calories per gram; hence the higher its alcohol content is, the more calories will be present in each beer consumed. Assuming you drink responsibly and at moderate levels, two or three drinks should suffice without significantly impacting weight gain.
If you plan on drinking more than several beverages each week, please consult with a medical provider to assess if it is safe. Furthermore, avoid consuming large quantities of calories through other sources, such as fast food or desserts in order to maintain a healthy body weight.
There is evidence to support the theory that certain kinds of beer can help people lose weight, although for optimal weight loss it would be best to opt for lower calorie beverages such as water, green tea or low fat milk instead.
Both beer and coffee contain caffeine, which can give you energy while helping to suppress appetite. To get maximum benefit from caffeine intake, no more than 200 mg should be consumed each day (roughly equivalent to two cups of brewed coffee).
Beer may contain beneficial nutrients like niacin and folate; however, whole food sources offer much more nutritional value. If you decide to drink beer regularly, be mindful of serving sizes; no more than 12 ounces for regular beer, 5 ounces for wine and 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits is considered one serving.
