Coffee has long been known for boosting energy, but a new trend is emerging that adds an unexpected ingredient: butter. Dubbed “butter coffee” or “bulletproof coffee,” this beverage is being touted for giving people extra energy, improving concentration, improving cognitive function and offering other health benefits. Celebrities, athletes and fitness influencers who swear by its benefits swear by it too; some believe its slow absorption may prolong its effects while its high fat content could increase energy levels without creating the inevitable caffeine crash later.

Coffee-butter concoctions originate in Tibet’s Himalayan Mountains, where locals traditionally created warm butter tea to combat cold temperatures. Nowadays, they’re usually made by mixing low acid coffee with unsalted butter and MCT oil (more commonly referred to as ghee). Bulletproof founder Dave Asprey popularized this drink by selling three-piece kits containing their low acid coffee beans, MCT oil and ghee bundled into one canister; you can also make this drink yourself using MCT oil, unsalted butter and brewed coffee from home!

Why People Drink It

Its rising popularity can be traced to an increase in consumer appetite for foods and drinks with high fat, low-carb content. Ketogenic diets emphasize eating healthy fats over carbohydrates; additionally, this beverage can provide relief from digestive issues like bloating, diarrhoea and gas.

Butter coffee is a high-calorie beverage, with each cup containing up to 450 calories – enough for it to cause weight gain if used as a replacement meal like breakfast! Furthermore, its saturated fat content raises cholesterol levels and increases heart disease risk; for these reasons the Cleveland Clinic suggests no more than two cups per day with grass-fed butter as it has less saturated fat and more “good” omega-3 fatty acids.

Butter coffee may offer some benefits in terms of its caffeine effects on brain function and energy levels, though its potential advantages for everyone may not apply equally – especially those with digestive issues or those trying to shed extra weight. It should be used sparingly and only as an occasional treat; regular cups of coffee offer greater cognitive advantages. Ultimately, butter coffee should never replace eating a complete and nutritious breakfast!
