Is Coffee Healthy?
Coffee has long been one of the world’s favorite beverages, and for good reason. Not only can this tasty beverage provide energy and improve mood, it can also provide antioxidants which protect cells against damage by helping prevent and repair cell division. Multiple studies have linked coffee consumption with decreased risk of type 2 diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, liver disease and gallstones as well as overall mortality rates.
An extensive observational study demonstrated that coffee drinkers had a 64% reduced risk of premature death when compared with those who didn’t drink coffee regularly, likely because regularly drinking two to four cups per day can significantly lower blood pressure and increase artery flexibility, both of which protect against heart disease. Furthermore, these same results indicated lower risks of Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s disease, liver cancer as well as Parkinsonian traits in coffee drinkers.
While we still do not fully understand why coffee may be beneficial to health, researchers believe its anti-oxidant polyphenols may be to thank. Polyphenols are plant compounds known to help lower risk for chronic diseases by reducing inflammation and stabilizing free radicals; research also suggests they can protect against liver and colon cancer as well as lower cholesterol levels.
Coffee should always be enjoyed in moderation; too much caffeine can have a wide array of negative side effects including heart palpitations, acid reflux, frequent urination, stomach upset and muscle tremors. Furthermore, coffee may interfere with certain medications including thyroid medication and some antidepressants; always consult with your doctor prior to increasing or decreasing caffeine consumption.

For maximum nutrition and flavor, the optimal way to consume coffee is black without sugar or sweeteners added, such as artificial sweeteners. One teaspoon of sugar equals about 15 calories which exceeds what’s recommended for both women and men. Aim for 1 teaspoon or less by incorporating natural nut or fruit flavors such as vanilla. Adding milk will only increase fat and calories so opt instead for almond or coconut milk as your beverage of choice.
Hot-brewed is your ideal option when it comes to creating the ideal cup of joe; it contains more antioxidants and no sodium or carbohydrates compared to instant or filtered coffee, and usually provides more protein and calcium than dairy milk options.
