Is Coffee More Healthy Than Soda?
Soda is packed with sugar and harmful additives, while coffee offers numerous health advantages. Though cutting out soda entirely may be difficult, there are ways to replace its refreshing effects with healthier options that still taste delicious. One such alternative would be drinking coffee or herbal tea as they are lower in calories and sugar consumption and better for overall health than soda.
Coffee contains more caffeine than soda, and therefore you should pay special attention to how much you are consuming each day. While 400 milligrams per day is generally considered safe for most adults, those sensitive to it should reduce their dosage accordingly.
Caffeine is a stimulant that can enhance alertness, but may also cause headaches and nerves for some people. To maintain health benefits from caffeine consumption, avoid having more than four cups a day as overindulgence could lead to insomnia, restlessness, anxiety and high blood pressure.
Soda contains many unhealthy additives, including high fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners and sodium. Drinking soda regularly may deplete calcium from bones while negatively impacting digestive system health and leading to obesity and diabetes; thus it should only be enjoyed occasionally as a treat.
Sugar content varies by beverage; specialty drinks often contain as much or more than regular soda cans. A recent test by British nutrition advocacy group Action on Sugar revealed that one Starbucks Venti White Chocolate Mocha with whip had 73.8 grams of sugar; for comparison, Coke contains only 33.
Beyond their sugar content, both soda and coffee contain caffeine in various amounts depending on processing and brewing techniques used to produce each beverage. A cup of brewed coffee could contain up to 140mg while Diet Coke contains 46mg.
