Is Cold Brew Healthier Than Hot Coffee?
When it comes to coffee, we all strive to find our ideal cup. Aiming for energy boost, mood lift and an invigorating wakeup experience is our aim when selecting our beverage of choice; while hot brew is often preferred. In recent years, cold brew has gained prominence due to its lower acidity levels and higher antioxidant content which claim impressive health benefits compared with hot coffee. So is cold brew healthier than its counterpart?
Cold brew coffee may contain lower acidity than its acidic counterparts, yet still contain caffeine at levels exceeding those found in Starbucks grande size drinks. This is due to the way cold brew preparation involves more ground coffee being exposed to water during its brewing process and thus more caffeine being extracted than would occur when simply pouring over grounds for regular iced coffee brewing methods.
Cold brew coffee may be less abrasive on your stomach than traditional coffee, but that does not equate to healthier or lower caffeine consumption. What matters more is balancing diet with exercise while limiting caffeine intake so as to avoid unwanted side effects from too little or too much consumption.
Why does cold brew taste so smooth and mellow? It may have something to do with its non-heated brewing method, which doesn’t use heat, which prevents bitter compounds and acidity from being released into the drink and leaving behind something sweet that is naturally flavorful.
Are you curious about making cold brew at home? No worries; we have you covered. Firstly, selecting the appropriate beans – any variety will do, though coarsely ground ones work best as they won’t break apart too easily during brewing. Furthermore, use high quality water as this will greatly affect how the finished product tastes.
Once your coffee is brewing, the next step should be adding water and ice as desired. For an extra chilled experience, pour your iced coffee over some cubes of ice before sipping away! Or for something bolder yet more intense in taste try cold brew by stirring in milk or cream to your liking – or take it with you on-the-go by pouring over a cup of ice before sipping away!
