Many people drink decaf coffee to avoid caffeine’s side effects such as the jitters or difficulty sleeping. Unfortunately, recent concerns over methylene chloride – one of the chemicals used during decaffeination process – which has been linked with cancer have caused many to abandon its health benefits of decaf coffee drinking altogether.

Coffee is one of the world’s favorite beverages and it is widely recognized for its numerous health benefits, such as reduced risk of diabetes and some cancers, improved weight management, etc. Recently however, debate regarding whether coffee and other caffeinated drinks are healthy has heated up more than usual due to an initiative petitioning FDA for decaf coffee made with methylene chloride be removed from food supply chains.

Methylene chloride (MCH) is an organic compound commonly found in plants and some animals. Exposure through inhalation or skin contact to this compound may lead to symptoms including drowsiness, respiratory issues and nausea; however, for decaffeinated coffee beverages it has strict FDA standards which limit it to 10 parts per million, far lower than what might be exposed during normal workplace conditions.

Issue two is that while most decaf coffee is produced without the use of methylene chloride, some isn’t. This is due to two methods of decaffeination – direct and indirect. Direct decaf is made using beans soaked directly in solvent while indirect involves roasting first before being doused in water for decaffeination. Unfortunately there’s no way of knowing which kind of decaf you’re buying since US manufacturers don’t need to disclose which decaffeination method they employ!

If your digestive tract can handle the acidity of coffee and it doesn’t interfere with high blood pressure or sleep disruptions, continue enjoying your daily cups of joe. Just be sure to limit add-ins such as sugar, syrup, and creamers in order to limit calorie consumption; unsweetened decaf is ideal since this will not add extra sugar into your system; for those having trouble giving up sweet tastes altogether try switching it out for cinnamon instead – adding this delicious spice will still help meet health goals!
