Is French Vanilla Coffee Halal?
Tim Hortons fans might be asking themselves, is French Vanilla Coffee Halal? While technically the answer is “yes”, one must be wary when ordering one of their regular French Vanilla drinks containing non-halal ingredients; these typically consist of regular coffee with French vanilla syrup and steamed milk added. But other halal options can be found such as Iced Cappuccinos and Caramel Macchiatos which offer an option.
Vanilla extract is produced by soaking vanilla beans in alcohol and then evaporating the liquid, creating a flavorful syrup used in many desserts and beverages. Some people are concerned about how much alcohol there is present in vanilla extract; whether or not its consumption is forbidden. Some scholars argue that its small amount won’t cause intoxication so its consumption should be permitted; other scholars insist on only eating food and beverages that don’t contain any form of alcoholic substances at all.
The IFANCA organization has approved several vanilla flavors as halal. They achieve this certification by carefully inspecting ingredients, formulation, production process and any ethanol used during manufacturing as Khamr is non-alcoholic and doesn’t exceed 0.5% in volume; additionally they ensure it does not contain animal byproducts to ensure it remains halal.
Some companies produce halal vanilla extract by substituting glycerin for alcohol in their product packaging, making this an attractive halal option. As with traditional vanilla extracts however, it’s essential that ingredients lists reflect this alternative approach and no animal products are present in their ingredients list.
Tim Hortons products are mostly halal-certified with the exception of their French Vanilla drink which contains non-halal ingredients like milk and sugar. Otherwise, most items such as Iced Cappuccinos, Caramel Macchiatos and many of their cakes, cookies and pastries fall within this category; one exception would be their Chicken and Waffles which they plan to introduce onto their menu later on.
