Coffee enthusiasts have many choices when it comes to brewing their morning cup: French press, automatic drip brewing, pod brewing or cold brew — the options can seem endless! As far as health goes though, instant coffee may or may not fit your personal needs and preferences.

Assuming an average cup of instant coffee contains around 7 calories, depending on its brand and variety, adding sweeteners or milk may increase its caloric intake further. If calorie restriction is something you care about, plain instant coffee packets or sugar alternatives such as Stevia or Erythritol would be best as these contain lower calorie counts while still providing essential antioxidants such as potassium and magnesium, according to Vandana Sheth, RDN, CDCES, FAND who operates a nutritional consulting company.

However, instant coffee may contain higher levels of acrylamide due to the higher temperatures it is exposed to during production. Acrylamide is a toxic chemical which may increase cancer risks, nervous system conditions and liver issues when eaten excessively; however eliminating coffee from your diet won’t reduce acrylamide exposure as this chemical can also be found in French Fries, Potato Chips, Breakfast Cereals and Crackers – not likely reducing it altogether!

Brew or instant, both offer benefits such as increased alertness, potent antioxidants (light roasts may contain slightly more than dark roasts) and potential heart and brain health advantages. But it is important to keep in mind that too much caffeine consumption may cause headaches, jitters, insomnia or other health problems; in order to maintain optimal levels of caffeine consumption it is advised that three or four cups of instant coffee be consumed per day as recommended by health experts.

Instant coffee makes an excellent way to increase morning energy levels with smoothies and shakes, or as an ingredient in recipes as an alternative to sour cream. Dissolving it in hot water first will ensure it is easier to work with without leaving behind coarse granules that might otherwise cause friction during handling.

Instant coffee can also be sprinkled onto baked goods such as cupcakes or muffins for a subtle coffee flavor without adding too much liquid. Or add it to chocolate brownie mix for a rich and decadent treat that won’t derail your healthy eating goals!
