Is McDonald’s Coffee Halal?
McDonald’s coffee is certified halal. To be considered halal, coffee must not contain any animal by-products or ingredients cooked with pork or beef fat, and must also be prepared using fresh water without additives or chemicals. Furthermore, its beans come from sustainable agriculture farms without being irradiated or genetically modified – two essential requirements to meet in order to qualify.
McDonald’s locations worldwide also provide halal offerings as part of their standard menu, such as:
All McDonald’s restaurants in Bahrain are halal, and since 2015 they have also opened several halal stores on Gozo Island. As well as serving their flagship Big N Tasty meal with optional barbecue, sweet and sour or ketchup sauce; and their Mashwi Foldover featuring chicken patties with garlic sauce; McDonald’s chains in Bahrain also offer mozzarella sticks and chicken wings for delivery to customers.
McDonald’s in the United Arab Emirates uses HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point) to ensure food safety throughout their supply chain, employing an audit team which regularly audits suppliers to make sure they adhere to halal standards.
McDonald’s operates several halal-certified outlets across other Muslim countries. For example, Indonesia has all McDonald’s restaurants certified to serve halal products under supervision by Muslim employees, in addition to providing their standard menu items like McRice meal consisting of steamed rice with bits of vegetables and beef/chicken; Bubur Ayam Spesial chicken soup served with tomato ketchup; and Sambal Chili Sauce which are staples in Indonesian cooking.
McDonald’s offers an impressive variety of halal desserts and beverages, such as the customizable McFlurry with any flavor imaginable, fruit pies, cakes, shakes and lattes; in addition to juices and sodas that meet Islamic law standards.
McDonald’s salads do not conform to halal standards. McDonald’s uses a pre-packaged dressing not made from kosher oil and its meat cannot be considered kosher if slaughtered using non-halal methods, making it impossible to find an entirely kosher McDonald’s outside Israel and Buenos Aires. Yet this fast food chain remains popular with many Jews; many Jewish activists have worked to keep its doors open here in America.
