Is Mushroom Coffee a Scam?
Mushroom coffee has generated much discussion recently as some tout it as a possible solution for better immunity and overall health. But exactly what is it and does it work?
Mushroom coffee is real coffee blended with medicinal mushrooms such as chaga and lion’s mane fungi that contain antioxidants and compounds with potential health benefits, helping stabilize blood sugar levels while increasing energy. This creates an intriguing blend that may taste similar to regular coffee without its associated caffeine crash and digestive issues.
Mushroom coffee brands such as RYZE, Four Sigmatic and Mushroom Science are some of the more acclaimed choices, each boasting their own version and promising health benefits that include improved focus, immune enhancement and anti-ageing effects. But remember: mushroom coffee should never replace eating whole foods rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals for optimum nutrition.
Mushroom coffee’s fungi could also interact with some medications. According to nutritionist Sarah Olszewski, RD, medicinal mushrooms such as chaga, lion’s mane and reishi “can interact with anticoagulants, immunosuppressants and some diabetes drugs”; in addition, those suffering from stomach or kidney conditions should avoid these types of mushrooms as they contain high concentrations of oxalates which could contribute to stone formation.
No matter the hype, mushroom coffee does not provide any greater health benefits than traditional coffee from cafes and is typically more costly.
If you’re curious to try mushroom coffee for yourself, make sure it comes from an organic brand made in the US. Do keep in mind, though, that regular coffee offers its own set of health advantages as well; these may include lower risks of cancer and heart disease. Alternatively, to gain the health benefits of mushrooms without eating them daily with your coffee, consider taking a daily mushroom supplement that includes these beneficial fungi – you’ll find these at most health food stores or online. As with any medication, capsules, powder, and liquid supplements need to be taken in a consistent dose. Most brands recommend starting off slowly–one fourth of the recommended serving size–in order to minimize potential sensitivities or allergic reactions.
