Is Reishi Coffee Good For You?
The mushroom coffee trend claims many benefits for its drinkers: increased energy and mental clarity, de-bloating assistance and immune support are just a few. But is mushroom coffee actually beneficial for us?
Reishi mushrooms have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine as an aid to long-term health and longevity, with studies showing they reduce stress while combatting fatigue and anxiety. Furthermore, Reishi contains beta-glucans which strengthen your immune system by helping white blood cells target tumors or abnormal cells more effectively.
Other types of medicinal mushrooms, like chaga and cordyceps, may help boost adrenal gland health and alleviate stress. With their natural soothing effect and abundance of amino acids that reduce cortisol levels, these types of medicinal fungi could also offer some relief for managing stress levels.
Mushrooms are generally recognized as adaptogens, meaning they help the body adjust to environmental stressors or other factors that could compromise health. More research needs to be conducted in humans before we can validate their effects.
Mushrooms may increase bleeding risk for those taking blood thinners and have been found to decrease blood sugar levels, so drinking mushroom coffee alongside diabetes medications might not be wise.
If you’re curious to try mushroom-infused coffee, start slowly and increase the dose as tolerated. Always consult with a healthcare provider prior to including new foods or supplements into your diet. Caroline Kee is a TODAY Health Reporter in New York City.
