Reishi mushroom (also referred to as lingzhi or mannentake) has long been used by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners as an ancient medicinal remedy, believed to boost immunity, promote relaxation and aid sleep. Recent research studies have also demonstrated its ability to reduce anxiety and depression and improve overall mood.

Reishi mushrooms are known as adaptogens, meaning that they help balance your hormones and combat stress in an anti-inflammatory fashion. As such, Reishi may help lower blood pressure as well as alleviate insomnia or other sleep issues. It has also been found to decrease chronic stress effects on mood and energy levels while simultaneously improving them.

Studies have demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of Reishi in protecting against various health conditions, such as cancer and autoimmune diseases. Reishi’s beta-glucans and other compounds stimulate natural killer cells which attack cancerous cells; its peptidoglycans and triterpenes strengthen immune function as well as providing powerful anti-inflammatory properties.

Reishi has been shown to reduce the severity of symptoms for those living with fibromyalgia, including fatigue and mood swings. A randomized controlled trial found that it significantly decreased fatigued days while improving quality of life for these individuals.

Reishi has also proven an effective treatment for chronic fatigue, by stimulating activity of specific white blood cells that fight off infections and other health concerns. Furthermore, unlike some medications aimed at relieving fatigue such as drowsiness or dizziness, Reishi doesn’t cause side effects such as these either.

Studies suggest that Reishi may be beneficial in treating metabolic disorders such as obesity and diabetes. Mice fed high-fat diets were given Reishi extract for three weeks; as a result they experienced decreased fat tissue, improved gut bacteria that promote healthy weight, and less inflammation in their arteries – likely due to how its polysaccharides alter the balance of gut bacteria from firmicutes to bacteroidetes, leading to healthier gut and metabolism conditions.

Reishi tea may help protect the liver by decreasing harmful biochemical reactions that contribute to liver inflammation and cancerous tumor growth, and has shown antioxidant properties that protect against the oxidative damage associated with aging.

Reishi may provide various health benefits; however, further research must be completed in order to confirm these claims. It should also be noted that pregnant or breastfeeding women and children under 13 are advised against taking it; additionally as with any herb or supplement it’s always wise to consult your physician first – particularly if you have preexisting health conditions or are currently taking medications.
