Is There a Healthy Alternative to Coffee?
Coffee has long been part of morning rituals for many, providing them with energy and flavor without adverse side effects. Unfortunately, however, caffeine can sometimes cause jitters or an abrupt crash, while others find the acidity hard on their stomachs. At times they may even simply tire of their usual cup and want something with similar benefits but without as many adverse side effects.
There are thankfully many healthy alternatives to coffee that offer similar energy without the same jitters or crash. From matcha green tea and yerba mate to low-caffeine drinks like herbal teas, there are options out there for anyone seeking low-caffeine or even caffeine-free beverages.
One excellent alternative to coffee is chicory root brewed as a hot or cold beverage, which has long been enjoyed as a popular coffee substitute since the 1800s. Chicory is naturally decaffeinated and contains many healthy nutrients such as inulin that stimulate good bacteria in your digestive tract for improved digestive health. Plus, its flavor resembles coffee!
Green tea offers both caffeine and numerous other advantages, as well as being high in antioxidants that may lower risk of cardiovascular disease, cancer, and other ailments. Plus, its L-theanine content has been scientifically shown to promote relaxation and relieve stress (via WebMD).
Ginseng tea, known for its ability to boost energy levels and many health benefits, makes an excellent coffee alternative. As with green tea, ginseng tea contains anti-inflammatory compounds as well as vitamins and minerals such as iron.
There are also other coffee alternatives readily available at most grocery stores, such as ground roasted barley or cocoa powder which provide similar flavors without caffeine content. For something more exotic and potentially healthier than coffee, why not consider pu’er tea from China which contains dried leaves of trees up to 600 years old.
There’s sure to be something healthy and tasty out there if you want to switch up your morning drink, no matter the reason! Be sure to enjoy it moderately so as to avoid experiencing any unwanted side effects – from matcha green tea to mushroom coffee there is something suitable for every caffeine tolerance level and taste preference – just avoid sugary beverages as they can be just as harmful!
