Mushroom Tea and Paul Stamets
Paul Stamets of Renegade Mycology doesn’t resemble the character from Star Trek who goes by that same name, but both men share an interest in fungi. Paul has dedicated his life to building bridges between humans and mushrooms.
Turkey tail mushroom extracts have been shown to improve endurance among athletes, while Stamets’ mother found relief from cancer thanks to agarikon’s antiviral properties.
Benefits
Paul Stamets has opened up our world to the limitless potential of mushroom mycelium and its power as a connector between our ecosystems and us humans (mycofiltration), and harnessing beneficial mushrooms as supplements to support health (mycoremediation). His central idea is that humans are simply another habitat, so we should act accordingly.
Mushrooms have long been used for their medicinal qualities. As natural antivirals, inflammatory inhibitors, antibiotics and immune boosters, mushrooms have long been utilized to treat wounds, stress, rheumatoid arthritis, insomnia anxiety depression PTSD asthma cancer allergies as well as many other ailments. Mushrooms are also well known to possess antitumor, anti-diabetic and digestive properties.
Paul is an esteemed mycologist with numerous scientific publications on the neuroregenerative benefits of microdosing psilocybin mushrooms for microdose use. Additionally, he’s written seven books, spoken at TED talks, and holds over 20 patents related to mushroom technology. Furthermore, Paul founded Quantified Citizen; an app which crowdsources citizen science data in order to improve public health through crowdsourcing citizen science data from users.
As part of our Mushroom Collection, we have designed a tea that incorporates several of our favorite medicinal mushroom varieties for an enjoyable caffeine free and adaptogen rich drink that can be enjoyed any time during the day.
This refreshing tea features our organic, high-altitude grown turkey tail and lion’s mane mushroom extracts for maximum energy and wellness benefits. Both mushrooms contain powerful antioxidants with numerous bioactive compounds; research indicates this combination supports immune function, cardiovascular health and cognitive well-being.
As well as increasing immunity, this tea contains reishi mushroom which has long been recognized for its anti-tumor properties. Laboratory studies have demonstrated its ability to inhibit tumor growth while also protecting against oxidative damage.
Hericium erinaceus, more commonly known as the jack-bean mushroom, has also been included in this tea. Studies have demonstrated its potent anti-inflammatory and dietary supplement benefits; beta-d-glucans can support healthy gut function. Plus, this nutrient dense mushroom may increase immunity against infection while supporting cell repair processes in your body.
Ingredients
Paul Stamets made an amazing confessional on Episode #1035 of the Joe Rogan Experience when he shared how his stutter saved his life during an incredible rainstorm in the woods, when high on mushrooms he found himself stuck up a tree during a heavy downpour.
Stamets is an internationally acclaimed mycologist who has published seven books; presented TED talks; and filed over 20 patents related to mushroom-related technology. Additionally, his name was given as inspiration for Anthony Rapp’s Star Trek: Discovery Astromycologist character as well as for a new species of Psilocybe (Psilocybe stametsii).
As well as his expansive knowledge of mycology, Dr. Ho is also what’s known as an autodidact – someone who self-taught themselves their chosen field. While he did study mycology as an undergrad course, most of his education came through practical experience, trial-and-error, and constant experimentation.
Our efforts have culminated in an adaptogen-rich tea, designed to connect you with nature’s wisdom and the wondrous world of mushrooms. Created in collaboration with Louie Schwartzberg – director of Netflix documentary Fantastic Fungi – it contains Reishi mushroom for energy boost and coconut palm sugar for sweetness.
Steeping Instructions
Mushroom tea is an effective beverage that offers numerous health advantages, from immune system support and cognitive enhancement, to anxiety reduction and depression relief. You can drink this beverage either hot or cold; its effects can be further amplified with ingredients like lemon juice, honey, ginger root or other natural herbs mixed into it for enhanced results. However, be careful when drinking too quickly as its effects could become overwhelming quickly.
Paul Stamets is an internationally acclaimed mycologist and mushroom expert renowned for his groundbreaking research on fungi. This knowledge has resulted in groundbreaking new techniques used for everything from cleaning oil spills to protecting bee populations – with his fame prompting him to travel widely while speaking publicly about his work, though most of his time can still be spent at his cabin on Cortes Island in British Columbia.
Stamets has become one of the leading experts on mushrooms worldwide and regularly makes appearances in podcasts, movies and other forms of media such as festivals and events. Though he received some formal education in Mycology he mostly self-educated himself – thus becoming one of the foremost authorities on mushrooms globally.
One of the hallmarks of his success lies in his unique ability to translate his expertise and experience to everyday people. His approach to psychedelic mushrooms is easy-going and accessible; many times his presentations serve as platforms to inform people about these extraordinary plants’ capabilities.
First step to creating mushroom tea: clean and shred mushrooms into fine powder form to increase their surface area, thus helping psilocybin dissipate more readily into water. After that, place mushroom powder into a teapot and pour boiling water over it for 10-15 minutes to steep the mushrooms before drinking the tea.
After steeping, strain out the mushrooms from your liquid potion. Some people also like to add lemon, other flavor additives or superfood elements into their tea to customize its taste and experience. It is best to enjoy drinking your tea slowly over several hours in an isolated and safe environment.
Storage
As with any tea, mushrooms should be enjoyed right after brewing; ideally within hours or days of preparation. Although storing in the fridge for up to three days should work fine. Freezing has not shown to significantly extend shelf life for mushroom tea either.
Tea can also be prepared as a hot herbal infusion, though its effects won’t be as powerful. To do this, simply steep one teaspoon of dried chaga mushroom powder in hot water for several minutes until an infusion forms – an easy and enjoyable way to increase immune support!
Chaga tea can be consumed as a medicinal herb to improve cardiovascular health, boost energy and immunity levels, aid with cancer treatments and provide anti-inflammatory benefits. In addition, its antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties make it an invaluable ally. Add Chaga to hot or cold beverages or mix into soups and stews.
Alternately, mushroom powder can be added to juices and shakes, oatmeal or other breakfast food items and even sprinkled on salads to give them an earthy flavour. It is advised to start out by taking small doses before increasing slowly up to a maximum daily dosage of 5 grams of dried chaga.
As mushroom tea supplements, it is essential to remember that fungi work best when combined with supportive herbs. Fungi are closely tied with their surrounding ecosystem, helping it heal itself when damaged. Some of the best-performing species for supporting healthy ecosystems include turkey tails, woodlovers, oyster mushrooms and Psilocybe stametsii mushrooms.
Paul Stamets is an esteemed mycologist and eco-mycologist who has dedicated much of his career to discovering ways that mushrooms can help heal our planet. As part of this research he has written seven books, given numerous TED talks and amassed over 20 patents on mushroom-related technology. For his groundbreaking research regenerative power of mushrooms has earned two namesakes; Anthony Rapp from Rent fame plays him on Star Trek Discovery TV show while an entirely new species of Psilocybin mushroom species has also been named in his honour!
