Organo Gold Pyramid Scheme
This case revolves around a multilevel marketing company selling coffee and other products, employing independent representatives (IRs). Their salespeople receive commissions not only on their sales but also for those of primary IRs they recruit as primarys, and secondary recruits recruited by them as secondary IRs.
This company produces coffee and personal care items containing extract from Ganoderma Lucidum mushroom, which may provide health benefits; however, no evidence has been presented to support these claims.
It is a MLM company
The company offers a selection of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate products infused with Ganoderma Lucidum extract – better known as Reishi mushroom – which the company claims offers antioxidant and antiviral benefits. Furthermore, personal care items such as soap and toothpaste are also offered from this line of personal care items; their popularity being promoted by celebrities and athletes.
Organo Gold was established by experienced network marketers from the Philippines who have spent years in multilevel marketing. Prior to founding Organo Gold, they marketed Gano Excel which offered reishi mushroom supplements – but the Federal Trade Commission claimed this scheme was illegal pyramid scheme.
Distributors for the company make claims about its products’ health benefits, yet there is no scientific support to back these up. Their website claims reishi mushroom as an adaptogen that helps the body manage various sources of stressors; however, NYU Langone Medical Center disputes these assertions with no scientific backing for such claims.
Despite these accusations, the company maintains it is legitimate MLM and not a pyramid scheme. But allegations exist regarding making exaggerated income claims to new recruits as well as using high-pressure motivational events to sell its products.
MLM companies that resemble pyramid schemes do not pay their distributors from product sales proceeds, but instead from money generated through recruiting other members. Therefore, to avoid being labeled as pyramid schemes by regulators and their members, MLM companies must uphold strict ethical standards and follow all laws regarding recruitment of members into their scheme. Furthermore, regulatory bodies exist within this industry which keep an eye on activities.
An acceptable MLM structure focuses on selling its product or service directly to outsiders rather than recruiting other members, has a clear compensation plan for distributors, is free from legal actions or past lawsuits and boasts a good market valuation – all qualities which help build consumer trust and foster long-term consumer relationships. Furthermore, legitimate MLMs should feature real success stories as well as supportive networks to inspire confidence among potential distributors.
It is a pyramid scheme
Multilevel marketing can be a contentious industry. Proponents refer to it as direct selling while critics refer to it as pyramid marketing; recently this debate has intensified with the rise of multilevel marketing companies that specialize in selling dietary supplements and wellness products – one such multilevel marketer being Organo Gold which recently made claims regarding the health benefits of Ganoderma Lucidum mushroom extract as being beneficial.
Organo Gold has received over 55 complaints since it launched in 2008. While Organo Gold denies being a pyramid scheme, many of its characteristics suggest otherwise; such as placing heavy emphasis on recruiting new salespeople while having steep start-up costs for distributors joining as new distributors; furthermore it promotes itself via high-pressure motivational events and promotions.
A pyramid scheme is an inherently fraudulent business model in which most participants will lose their initial investments. It typically works by paying those at the top of the pyramid for recruitment services while charging new recruits a fee to join, until finally when new recruits stop joining and the pyramid collapses, most people lose their initial investment.
Some pyramid schemes use digital currencies and cryptocurrency sales to make money, yet are difficult to detect due to a lack of transparency and legitimacy. Furthermore, many of these companies enlist social media influencers as part of their promotion efforts and to recruit participants into their schemes.
Even though multilevel marketing companies are subject to state and federal regulation, they can still be difficult to spot. Many disguise their true business model by advertising themselves as “health and wellness” companies; some even include disclaimers stating they are not pyramid schemes in their promotional materials. Unfortunately, however, multilevel marketing companies still pose significant risks for individuals hoping to make a living from home; regulators are taking measures against such firms, while consumers become more informed of such risks.
It is a fraud
Pyramid schemes are an illegal scheme which involve recruiting salespeople to sell an overpriced product at high start-up costs and through word of mouth to generate income. Pyramid schemes often focus more on recruiting members than selling actual products and may use high-pressure motivational seminars as marketing techniques. Although Organo Gold claims to be legitimate multi-level marketing company, in reality it has not registered its business in Guyana, has avoided paying taxes, thus becoming vulnerable against lawsuits as well as allegations of corruption against it.
It is a legitimate company
Organo Gold claims it is a legitimate company; however, the brand has generated numerous consumer and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) complaints against itself for making false and exaggerated claims about earnings potential as independent distributors for its products; also making health claims that are both exaggerated and falsified.
Organo Gold, established in 2008, is a multi-level marketing company offering coffee, tea, hot chocolate and other nutritional supplements infused with Ganoderma Lucidum or Reishi mushroom for health benefits including cholesterol reduction and antiviral properties. Organo Gold also recruits people as distributors and promotes their own products through distributor networks.
This company, with roots in Salt Lake City, Utah and current operations in 32 countries worldwide, boasts sales estimated by trade publication Direct Selling News at approximately $170 million each year. Products offered by Ganoderma Inc include coffee infused with Ganoderma fungi; blended green tea featuring Ganoderma; and blended hot chocolate made using Ganoderma powder as ingredients. Furthermore, several celebrity influencers have collaborated with Ganoderma Inc to promote its products.
As part of its multi-level marketing structure, this company also offers an incentive program for members. They can earn points by purchasing products or recruiting distributors, redeeming these points for cash (some have even earned hundreds of thousands!), and training and supporting independent representatives.
While most pyramid scheme companies are scams, some can provide legitimate income opportunities for hard working individuals. Legitimate companies usually employ transparent business practices and offer products designed to enhance health – but before making your decision it is essential to conduct extensive research before choosing your chosen organization.
Digital currency and cryptocurrency have become integral parts of many pyramid scheme companies’ business models, helping to reach wider audiences and attract more participants while simultaneously creating urgency among members by promising fast money. Furthermore, some pyramid scheme businesses have formed relationships with social media influencers in order to promote their products and recruit more participants.
