THE VFUEL STORY
During the 2008 Leadville Trail 100 race I choked down 58 packets of a popular energy gel over 29 hours and suffered greatly. I knew there had to be a better way to fuel my body, and started a personal quest to create it. Over the next few years, through extensive research, testing, and field use with the help of the Front Range running community, we developed our own endurance fuels that do more than just give a quick spot of energy while tearing up your guts and wearing out your taste buds. We fine-tuned the ingredients for optimal performance based both on the science behind each ingredient and actual field testing while training and running some of the toughest mountain races like the Leadville Trail 100 and the Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run. The result: endurance fuels that not only taste fantastic, but also go down easy without causing digestive issues and perform better than any ‘energy’ product out there.

Superior Performance
Our unique combination of specialized ingredients and natural flavors fuel you for as long as it takes. VFuel tastes great and goes down easy hour after hour. We use several different metabolic pathways to provide fuel to your body. We have malto and a simple sugar (dextrose) similar to many other products, but we also have MCT oil (fractionated coconut oil) as a way to get more energy diffused through the GI tract. MCT oil requires very little energy for absorption but is also a dense source of calories. A perfect marriage for the endurance athlete! Also athletes report it helps with “brain fog”. The small amount of Glucuronolactone in VFuel also helps to keep liver glycogen levels up to provide more consistent energy for the long haul.
Superior Digestion
By staying completely, 100% away from Fructose, our formula is the easiest on the stomach, hands down. Yes, this is a bold statement, but we stand by it and our customers can attest to the fact that even the most sensitive stomachs can use VFuel for hours & hours! When compared to other gels, it’s really no comparison-athletes are taking notice. VFuel, like many other energy gels, uses maltodextrin as the primary carbohydrate. But from there, we take a very different path. Most other gels use Fructose, or some sort of rice syrup or evaporated cane juice, all containing Fructose. VFuel uses Dextrose as its secondary carb, which is drastically easier to digest.
A very high percentage of complaints about gels are in regards to digestibility issues. We hear athletes say that “other brand” gels make them nauseated, bloated, ‘backs them up’, or even causes diarrhea. These issues are a direct result from the simple sugar that is used in most energy gels, Fructose.

All other gels fall short in this area. You will feel the difference when using VFuel.

I know I need calories on my longer runs and races but I’ve struggled to find the right calories replacement. Fruit and nut squeezes did not work with my body, so I needed to find a gel/drink. And with that came issues…. First off there’s the texture, chews take too long to consume, some gels feel like cement. Vfuel has an excellent texture – it’s smooth, non toxic and I can suck the pack down in about two swallows (even while running up hills). I follow it with a few sips of water and I’m good to go! Next is the taste. Mountain Berry is my favorite flavor – it’s very mild with no lingering funky after taste. The gel is very gentle on my stomach and hasn’t caused any cramping or other GI issues while running. I consume these gels while doing my longer trail runs and find it keeps me going during the run and I don’t seem to crash post long run when I use the gels. I typically take my first gel around mile 3-4 and then every 45min – hour after that (depending on how the day is going). I’ve seen great improvement in how I feel during and after races once I started using Vfuel.

I finished my first official marathon with these. Great help. I’ve trained for and run unofficial marathons for the last three years and used Gu, Cliff, and VFuel. From my experience, VFuel is better than Gu and Cliff gels for two reasons.1. With Gu or Cliff, my stomach starts to feel uncomfortable after around two and a half hours. That becomes a distraction for the next hour or so. Luckily I have no such issue with VFuel.2. Taste is a lot less strong than Gu or Cliff in a good way. This means I don’t have to drink water right after having a VFuel and don’t have to wait for a water station to do so. This helps me maintain my energy level more evenly though the race. With either Gu or Cliff, not washing down with water immediately feels just awful in my mouth. I don’t take then without water.I’ll use this for my next marathons.

Disappointed that this recent order had a defective packet in it. Thankfully, it was only one gel. Regardless, I’ve been a fan of these gels for a while now. Both the flavors and viscosity are perfect for endurance events of any kind. Not thick or chewy like other traditional gels. Also, as a fat-adapted athlete practicing OFM (Optimized Fat Metabolism) for training and racing, I can say that dextrose-based gels like VFuel absorb more quickly than sucrose/glucose-based gels and provide even energy…not the ups and downs of typical gels/sugars.

Great gels, love them, salty and easy to swallow. They are good even for events over 12 hours long. But who the heck came up with a chocolate flavor. It defeats the whole idea of non-sweet gels. That’s why 4 stars, otherwise it would be 5.

I think I’m a convert. I tried these on the recommendation of a friend and they have a couple of things going for them over GU and PowerBar gels. First, they are easy to open…a HUGE advantage while you are trying to keep it together bombing a downhill on technical trails and you need a quick refuel, or when your hands are freezing. Second, they are a bit more “liquidy” than other gels I’ve tried. This makes them easier to take without water, especially when it’s really cold out and they wash out of your mouth easier too. I’ve had zero stomach issues with them, but I also never really had problems with other gels. My only gripe, and for me it’s not really much of one because I just don’t care about this kind of thing, is that they all pretty much taste the same. There is minor variation between flavors, some are more tart, others have a sour or sweet note, but the base tastes is very similar across all the flavors. This doesn’t bother me one bit, but if you get hung up on stuff like this, just be aware.

Good, not great. If you’re used to the traditional ‘gel kick’ during a long distance race, these don’t do it. They are great for steady, long, slow runs but don’t expect them to do anything more than keep you linear. At the very most, they keep you from bonking. The packaging wasn’t great. Several of my packets leaked and there appeared to be an oily substance on the surface of the packets. Commendation is they are true to their word for not causing upset stomachs. Would I use these in easy training days? Yes. Race events? No. Value for money and worth the buy? Yes.

First and foremost, the Vfuel products PERFORM! Well worth the cost and really so make a difference. This is at least the second time I’ve ordered Vfuel and the package wasn’t good. The first time was the drink mix large bag, where the re-sealer part ripped and wouldn’t re-seal. Now I have received these busted gels. Both ordered from Amazon. The last time I emailed Vfuel and they responded very quickly with an apology and offered to send a replacement. I absolutely love the products, but Vfuel could look into making better packaging to protect the product more. Thanks.

Reading other reviews, my box of assorted gels came perfectly. Packaged in plastic and all gels were perfect. So far I have tried the Raspberry Lemonade and Fudge Brownie gel. I have a semi-sensitive stomach and read that these were easier on the system. I’ve only ran w/them once so I can’t judge it just yet but they are thinner than other brands and goes does pretty easily. Dont need a lot of water to wash it down and the flavors, so far, are very mild and not overly sugary. Will report back once I get a good feel for them with my stomach!

After not being satisfied with past Gels I’ve used I started using the Vfuel Endurance Gel this training season for the 2017 Houston Marathon. I originally had some concerns as it does contain sugar and I wasn’t sure if the Gel sugar and the Electrolyte Drink that contains sugar, given on the course would cause problems or deter performance.. I can truthfully say the actual results of running the Marathon using Vfuel didn’t detour my performance or cause any GI issues. I say detour performance because at my unscientific level of running, I have no way of knowing if it helped any more than another brand may have, the best I can say is it didn’t hurt performance and I will continue to use it and actually add a couple of additional packets to my next marathon, going from 4 to 6 and see if there are any additional results, good or bad. If this product actually allows me to take a couple of extra gels and continue with success, I’ll probably be giving it a 5 star…. More later!!!

As I started training for longer races I tried all kinds of fueling options. I learned the hard way that I needed to have a gel. But the gels I could get in the local running and sports stores were so sweet that after the second one my stomach was feeling not so sweet. When I first tried Vfuel at first I didn’t think it was having any effect. Then I realized that I was running for a long time without wearing down. They don’t give the quick hit of sugary gels – just sustained nutrition for the long haul. They’re now my go-to gel. The only reason I’m not giving it five stars is that I cannot get a variety pack without the maple flavored bacon gel. Not really the taste I want in the midst of a long run or bike.
