10 reviews for NOW Supplements, Certified Organic, Spirulina Powder, Rich in Beta-Carotene (Vitamin A) and B-12 with naturally occurring GLA & Chlorophyll, 1-Pound

  1. David G. Aimi

This is a real honest review from a real person. You may contact me if you wish to know more.My first week on Spirulina was interesting. Let me first start off by saying I misjudged the people here complaining about taste. I have a strong stomach so I tend to ignore these types of complaints & whines. The first thing you need to know is that this is a freshwater blue green algae folks, I’m not sure why you’re all expecting it to taste like gourmet food. After getting the Spirulina I popped it open. It was perhaps the deepest green color I’d ever seen. It looked like it came straight from a lush rain forest.I poured about 6 ounches of water and 1 tablespoon of the Spirulina into a protein shaker, shook it up and proceeded to slug it down with a big gulp. Let me remind you I have a super-strong stomach. As the first slug made it half way down my throat I gagged and almost heaved on spot. I was truly not expecting how bad the taste was to come. I’ve eaten some funky tasting supplments/powders before, non of which prepared me for this taste. The people on here calling it pond scum are being polite. Now, that is the negative part. You’ll notice I still gave this product 5 stars. The same morning I first tried Spirulina I brewed myself a large cup of coffee from my Keurig. After I chugged the Spirulina I got a super happy pro-active energy burst. It was like a thermogenic fat burner without the jitters. I ended up forgetting about my coffee and 3 hours later was working strong on some things I had to do. So far I’m getting through the taste through gritted teeth, but the way its making me feel is worth it!*** Update Week 3 ***- Tried 1 tablespoon in apple sauce to dilute taste. This did not work and still tasted bad.- Successfully mixed in one tablespoon with veggie shakes. Reduced taste and was drinkable, but I’m lazy and don’t make shakes every day.- I’ve heard things like grape juice can cut the taste but have not yet tried this.- Taste has not gotten easier. Buying a $20 easy capsule maker to capsule the powder.

NOW Supplements’ Certified Organic Spirulina has exceeded my expectations. The quality of this superfood supplement is outstanding, and being certified organic gives me confidence in its purity. I’ve noticed a significant improvement in my energy levels and overall well-being since incorporating it into my daily routine. The tablet form is convenient and easy to swallow, making it hassle-free to get a nutrient-rich boost. NOW Supplements has once again delivered a high-quality product, and their commitment to organic sourcing is commendable. If you’re looking for a reliable spirulina supplement, this one is a top choice.

When I prepared my first dose of this product I got myself psyched up to down it because of some of the negative reviews I read before buying saying how awful the taste was. Well to those of you who wrote negative reviews about the taste I have to say that you were exactly right… initially. So I choked it back and I felt like I was going to chuff it out half-way down but I made it through and surprisingly I felt fine when it was over. Like no different than knocking out a big glass of water fine… Like afterward, not during; and I found it very agreeable with my system. No tummy ache etc..So the taste didn’t improve for a while and I repeated this ritual every morning for about three weeks. It got better. I mean this stuff isn’t Kool-Aid. It’s algae. ALGAE. I accepted this and So did my palate and today the taste doesn’t bother me… that much. I guess there was a breaking in period for this stuff. At least for myself. Sound have I experienced any noticeable benefits? Yes. More sustained energy throughout the workday. Subtly, my overall awareness has increased… like spatial memory and overall mental clarity. I’m feeling a little sharper I guess and that’s good being at work 10+ hours a day; and during my workouts I seem to recover MUCH quicker between sets than before. Anyway I could go on. So, for those wanting to try this stuff I would say be prepared for it to be some rough stuff. This isn’t a drink for pleasure, it is a drink for health. But like anything else good for you, it’ll take some getting used too. I believe the benefits for me are far outweighing the getting used to the taste part. Five stars.

Seems to do as expected…Did lots of personal research on Chlorophyll & benefits Spirulina…All postive claims posted on web about ” Super Food ” qualities of Spirulina appear to be true about this product…I use this regularly throughout the day whenever making smoothies or shakes / formulas / special cocktails for walking, hiking, cycling, weightlifting, strength training, swimming, etc…Antioxidant, Anti-inflamation & Endurance / Energy claims appear to be true…Because I mix this in special formulas / smoothies & special cocktails I never have issues with taste, in fact I like flavor alot…This container is very inexpensive compared to other packages / containers available…I eat pretty healthy anyway… I’m not vegan but I eat mostly variety of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans / legumes, white meat ( tuna, salmon, sardines, occassionally chicken / turkey )…No flour nor wheat, nor dairy…There was nothing wrong with me to begin with…Hard to put it into words, but I just feel a bit better, stronger, less sore after exercising, better & longer sustained endurance & better focus & energy ( I don’t take or use caffeine )..But this powder did seem to help with endurance, less soreness after exercising and faster recovery times…Everyone is different so it’s highly personal results one may experience…But I have noticed that those I’ve shared smoothies / shakes & formulas containing one tablespoon of this in it have noticed difference eventhough they were not specifically aware Spirulina was added other than dark greenish / blue / black color of smoothies…

For starters, this really does smell and taste like fish rump. Big time. I opened the lid and the smell literally whaffed (may not be a real word but in this instance, it suits) around me and my kitchen. My dog, lying lazily on the floor, sprung up and ran for cover. It took every ounce of will power to spoon it out and add to my morning smoothie… And every day since.HOWEVER, this stuff is pretty amazing as far as effects are concerned. I first noticed that after a couple of days (of near vomiting during each preparation) I hadn’t taken my daily heartburn pill but I had no heartburn. I don’t know if this is a known positive but hey, I’m certainly not complaining. Second, my energy levels are up, hunter pagns are curved, and I haven’t sprouted fish gills. So I call it a win.(Hint: add banana. It mutes the putridity)

  6. This item will not charge beyond 64%. It is bigger than my iPhone and heavier than my iPhone. Very disappointed.

Best price I’ve found online. The company appears to be well known And trusted.

i have a rare form of diabetes and a ton of complications. stroke, cancer, heart failure and then GASTRO PARESIS. since my cardiologist insisted i become vegan, i have a lot of stomach issues from the GP. it’s dangerous and requires hospitalization and surgery if it gets too bad. your stomach is paralyzed so whole food just sits in it. very unpleasant, painful and requires meds. ok so what? right? i have a point. after speaking with gastro drs and they wanted to shove a tube down my throat but i have almost died 3 times from being intubated so hellno. i started researching, read about this product, tried it, without much faith in it and was totally shocked at the difference it has made in my life. MY LIFE! i thought i was having heart attacks or had an ulcer because of the stomach pain before i started taking spirulina every day. within 2 days, i felt better. within a week. i have been using this daily for weeks and have had no flares. i still have to be careful not to eat certain things, but this has given me back my life. i can actually eat without pain, i seemed to heal my gut, has given me energy and gives me a little added protein which is sometimes difficult eating vegan. so thank you for making and selling this product.

My “reviews” are typically long and relatively detailed. I believe in being educated about the products I buy and eat, so that’s the way I approach my reviews. For your convenience I have written this in two parts. Namely, IN BRIEF and the FULL REVIEW. If you don’t like long reviews (or simply don’t have the time), you might prefer to just read the IN BRIEF part. It’s up to you.>Spirulina does not need to taste bad. This one does, and sadly this seems to be putting people off of spirulina in general. Please read this review before that happens to you.I’ve been using spirulina for over 20 years. I have a few tablespoons almost daily. I can’t recommend it more highly (along with good quality Chlorella powder). I have never minded the taste of spirulina. I know some people (my mother included, who says it tastes too green and fishy) dislike the taste. When I started out on spirulina I was buying New Zealand brands (that’s where I lived), and those brands were likely sourcing raw material in India and/or China. When I first tried Hawaiian spirulina (about 18 years ago) it tasted markedly better. Fresh, creamy, and deliciously green.Because I prefer certified organic products, and because people were complaining about the taste of this product, I have recently tried this “Organic” spirulina from Now Foods. Simply put, it is the worst tasting spirulina I have experienced. I don’t recommend it, and I think paying a little extra for the Hawaiian spirulina is well worth it. Sometimes we get what we pay for, and in this case I personally feel that Nutrex Hawaii Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica Powder is better. Having said that, spirulina grown in Southern California by Earthrise is also very decent and is tastes fine (as far as Spirulina goes). But it is typically more expensive than Nutrex. If you are considering adding spirulina to your diet, PLEASE DO. Give it a few weeks of daily use, and I am sure you will be happy you did. I invite you to refer to my review on the

    Nutrex Spirulina

for some information on a nice tasting super-food drink recipe I make (affectionately known as my “swamp water”), and some other details on spirulina. As a traditional naturopath, I have put many clients and friends onto spirulina over the years and most, if not all, happily reported excellent benefits. More energy; less food cravings; less appetite; reduced or eliminated desire for animal (meat) products (in aspiring vegetarians); clearer head; less brain fog in the morning, etc.If you have the time and desire for more detailed information please read on. If not, may you enjoy the benefits of spirulina.>Since mid 2011 my review on the Nutrex Hawaiian spirulina recommended people to instead buy the 4 lb tub of non-organic spirulina from Now Foods. The reason was that Now Foods were sourcing their non-organic spirulina from the same company (Cyanotech) in Hawaii as the source of the Nutrex brand. The 4 lb tubs made it quite a bit cheaper per pound. It was an excellent deal.A few months ago (around mid 2012) people started complaining about the taste of the Now Foods (non-organic) spirulina. Read through the many reviews of this product and you will see what I mean. It’s almost comical to read. “It smells like crap, and tastes like it to”; “It was positively vile”; “Look it smells and tastes like fish ass”; “I tried to get over the taste, but can’t”; “this smells so awful no matter what I mix the powder with, no matter what ratio I use. And the horrid smell/taste lingers in my mouth and nose” – these are copy/pasted comments from five reviews I read over just now. Sadly, good spirulina tastes relatively nice, and it concerns me that this crappy tasting spirulina is putting people off of an otherwise excellent nutrient dense super-food.I enquired with Now Foods (and continue to do so) and found out they had ceased sourcing from Hawaii and were instead getting it from the same Indian company supplying their “Organic” spirulina – Parry Nutraceuticals. You can look up the website of Parry on google. You’ll see it all looks pretty impressive on paper, yet there is something seriously off about the taste of their organic and non-organic spirulina. When I say “off” I am being kind. I thought if I was going to continue buying Now Foods spirulina, and if it was coming from India no matter what option I bought from them, I might as well get a lb of their organic spirulina to try. My gosh. What a surprise…In over 20 years of almost daily spirulina usage (having had brands from all over the world [I travel a LOT]) I can safely say this is the worst tasting spirulina I have ever had the displeasure of trying. It literally smells like cow or horse manure. And it tastes the way I imagine cow manure would taste, based on the smell of cow manure. The net result is that in the few weeks since I received this “Organic Spirulina” from Now Foods, I have ceased being a spirulina eater. I live in Central America, so I have to wait until I can get some more Nutrex spirulina down here. I only dared try this green manure tasting powder from NOW three times in nearly three weeks. And each of those times, I had to put in a significant amount of ripe banana to try and mask the taste enough to be able to drink it. My partner refuses to drink it.If you don’t mind the manure taste, I have no particular reason to not recommend the NOW Foods spirulina products sourced from Parry Nutraceuticals. I will say I am not convinced paying the extra price for so-called “organic” is worth while for this particular product though. See my note about ORGANIC below. However, I know many people who already find the rich green taste of spirulina a little hard to stomach. Contending with the additional taste of manure is too much for them (it was for me). So the only recommendation I can make is that anyone serious about eating AND enjoying spirulina stick with or try the Hawaiian one, with the Nutrex brand. For that matter, I would recommend any made in the USA brand of spirulina, over and above this one from India (and I am not against products made in India, I just don’t like it when my spirulina tastes like manure). I happen to find the Hawaiian one tastes the nicest, but another US brand is

Earthrise Spirulina Natural Powder — 16 oz

. I have tried it, and it’s a lot nicer than this Indian one from NOW Foods. Here’s the link to the Hawaiian spirulina,

Nutrex Hawaii Hawaiian Spirulina Pacifica Powder, 16-Ounce Bottle

. I’ve been using that brand for about 18 years, and it tastes great (well, as great as something this green and nutrient dense could taste). I’ve shopped around and Amazon usually has the best price (especially with Prime free shipping included), but you might sometimes find it a little cheaper on other sites. But I always get it from Amazon, as their customer service and Prime shipping is the best I have experienced.>> ORGANIC ? > CONCLUSION

Second time purchasing product. First time it arrives like this.I thought the problem was that they delivered in an envelope type of packaging instead of a box and somehow was damaged, but when I tried to clean up the mess that flew out when I opened the package, I noticed the lid was half way lifted.I took the lid completely off and noticed these 5 holes which were not on the first bottle I ordered…I would have never consumed this if it would have arrived in this condition…basically there was no other broken parts other than these 5 holes…made a perfect enough mess inside the packaging and on me when I opened it.The question here is if someone is doing the tampering on purpose. As far as experience goes, I’ve never had an issue with the NOW products. I am keeping package as it arrived just in case something comes of this. Amazon does not want it and was advice to not return. I did get a full refund for this.Other than that the price is fair for the amount of product you get and the benefits are incredible.
