Ganoderma lucidum, also known as red Reishi or Gyuto mushrooms, have long been used in traditional Chinese medicine to promote health and longevity. Research studies have identified various bioactive substances associated with Ganoderma lucidum consumption including triterpenoids and polysaccharides; animal studies have reported the consumption of G. lucidum having beneficial effects such as hypoglycaemia treatment, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, hepatoprotective qualities, antioxidant activity as well as effects on blood pressure reduction.

G. lucidum water extract was shown to significantly decrease serum glucose levels after one week in both lean (+db/+m) and genetically obese/diabetic (+db/+m) mice due to down-regulating PEPCK gene expression and increasing insulin sensitivity in them.
