Should You Get Organic Coffee?
Organic coffee is a popular choice among health-minded consumers, but is it really worth spending extra on organic products? In my opinion, yes. By supporting fair trade and sustainable farming practices when purchasing organic goods and beverages, this investment makes even greater sense – plus organic products and coffee are better for the environment too!
Organic foods tend to cost more than non-organic options due to stricter requirements placed upon their farms that grow them. To meet certification as organic, 95 percent of crops must be produced without chemical fertilizers or synthetic pesticides; an expensive process that often eludes small farms.
If most of your coffee purchases come from large companies like Starbucks, it may not help small farmers in any way. That is because those farmers must agree to allow Starbucks inspectors into their fields and approve any chemicals being used if they wish to continue receiving contracts from such giant companies like this one. Unfortunately this requires them to alter their methods to meet those of big companies; eventually this may mean abandoning organic methods in favor of pesticides, making fulfilling contracts even harder than before.
Coffee is one of the world’s most heavily pesticide-sprayed crops, as farmers understand their more valuable crop has an incentive to use whatever means necessary – including banned fertilizers and pesticides – in order to safeguard it for harvest. Furthermore, widespread coffee production has resulted in the destruction of unique habitats such as rainforests.
People are understandably worried about the adverse impacts of chemicals on both themselves and the environment, making organic products preferable in terms of both health benefits and environmental sustainability. While no definitive studies exist to compare health outcomes between non-organic and organic coffee consumption, it seems reasonable to assume that eating or drinking any food or beverage which has not been exposed to chemical toxins would be better for your body overall.
Organic coffees are an excellent way to support the communities of farmers who grow them. Conventional agriculture often relies on harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides which harm the environment while making farmers sick; organic agriculture uses natural fertilizers such as sterilized dung and repellants that don’t put farmers at risk of inhaling harmful toxins.
Whenever purchasing organic coffee, aim for products produced from farms supported by small, fair trade, or direct trade businesses. Such farmers tend to be sustainable and treat their workers with dignity and respect while producing delicious cups that keep you energized throughout your day – not to mention how delicious high-quality coffee can improve mood and soul! So indulge guilt-free in organic coffee knowing you’re contributing positively to local economies, the environment, and yourself!
