Benefits
Mushrooms are widely considered superfoods and touted for their various health benefits. Packed with antioxidants that reduce inflammation, slow aging, and protect against heart disease and cancer; plus bone-strengthening vitamin D; recent studies suggest they may even improve cognitive functioning and help protect against dementia – mushrooms are packed full of these nutritional gems!
Mushrooms may be best known as a topping on pizza or in stir fry dishes, but their use as beverage substitutes – particularly coffee and tea beverages – has grown increasingly popular due to their natural caffeine-like flavor, which can be enhanced further with sweetener and cream.
Mushrooms come in many forms – dried, liquid extract and capsule – making them easy to add into drinks. Some varieties, like Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) have long been revered in Chinese cultures as symbols of longevity; it also boasts powerful anticancer properties as well as being beneficial in improving immune system functions and relieving fatigue.
Reishi mushrooms provide protein, fiber and vitamin D. Their thick cell walls make it hard to consume alone; however, these methods make digestion and absorption simpler while extracting all water-soluble components such as polysaccharides and triterpenes from these mushrooms.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom (Hydrolagus lepilus), another mushroom widely utilized in traditional Chinese medicine, can help stimulate nerve growth and may improve mild cognitive impairment. Furthermore, its high lupulin content may help decrease beta-amyloid plaque production that causes Alzheimer’s disease.
Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor), another medicinal mushroom, has been demonstrated to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure while inhibiting tumor growth and killing cancer cells. It can be taken either directly as a supplement or added to beverages such as tea and coffee for consumption; in the US this method is most popular; powdered versions are also available which can be mixed into herbal drinks or tea bags for easy consumption.
