The Journey of Nescafe Organic Coffee
Before your cup of nescafe reaches you, it has traveled far – from beans grown in remote forests all the way through to your coffee machine and ultimately into your cup. Along its path lies many impacts.
Nestle may have scaled back its expectations for organic growth in H1 2024, yet its coffee brands continue to perform strongly. We investigated whether this success can be attributed to value-seeking behaviors or enhanced supply chain management.
Does it taste better?
Nescafe Organic instant coffee is both Fairtrade and organic certified. Crafted with 100% Arabica beans that have been lightly roasted to produce its fruity citrus taste that your customers are sure to adore, this product comes packaged as 12 250g bags for easy use in commercial coffee machines.
Many consumers claim organic coffee tastes cleaner and more flavorful than its conventional counterparts, perhaps because organic products do not contain pesticides or fertilizers that could potentially alter its taste. Furthermore, organic beans tend to be grown under shade conditions which add extra depth of flavour in each bean.
Another reason that people enjoy organic coffee is that it provides support to local farmers. Farmers who grow organic beans tend to receive higher prices for their product, which helps sustain families and communities while giving these growers a better quality of life – something many consumers look for when selecting their coffee brand.
Nescafe Organic offers Fairtrade, organic instant coffee that uses only 100% Arabica beans that have been sustainably harvested without harming the environment.
Nestle, one of the world’s largest food and drink companies, is well-known for creating quality products, and this coffee from them certainly stands up. Crafted using organic coffee beans from Papua New Guinea for an exceptionally rich and smooth flavor; organic cocoa powder adds sweetness. Available at Sainsbury’s nationwide. A great option for anyone who’s interested in trying an organic instant coffee option!

Coffee offers numerous health advantages and is considered a dietary staple in moderation. It can help increase alertness, enhance memory recall and promote metabolism; however, excessive consumption of caffeinated beverages may have adverse side effects on health; therefore it’s best to drink coffee moderately and refrain from having late-day caffeine consumption as this may cause insomnia.
Organic coffee production avoids pesticides and herbicides used on conventional coffee crops that could potentially damage the environment, which benefits farmers and consumers alike. Growing it organically protects soil health and water supplies as well as providing a healthier environment for both farmers and consumers alike – an ideal option for individuals concerned about their environmental footprint and supporting sustainable agricultural practices.
Organic coffee isn’t just better for the planet; its cultivation also benefits farmers who cultivate it. Due to stringent standards for production, however, organic varieties often command higher prices than their non-organic counterparts – yet an increasing number of consumers are willing to pay extra for healthier food and drinks.
Organic products often carry the European organic logo to indicate they meet strict production requirements for organic production, such as no chemical fertilizers or pesticides, as well as no genetically modified ingredients, for consumer trust and ensure quality products.
Four Sigmatic has developed an organic coffee blend featuring ground and roasted organic 100% Arabica beans infused with finely ground adaptogenic mushrooms to produce an energy enhancing combination that promises numerous health benefits, such as immune support, cardiovascular support, reduced anxiety and enhanced cognitive performance. Four Sigmatic claims this combination has an unrivaled synergy that boosts vitality.
Is it better for the environment?
Instant coffee’s journey from farm to supermarket shelf is long and has an enormous environmental impact, yet organic farming attempts to minimise its environmental footprint by using less pesticides and herbicides that runoff into soil and waterways – harming wildlife like birds and fish and killing off ecosystems in their wake. Organic farmers tend to avoid such chemicals altogether but can receive training and equipment to assist them if need be.
As part of our guide to ethical shopping, we recently found that more companies selling coffee are offering products certified as organic. This includes Bird & Wild, Cafe Libertad, Cafeology and Revolver; Nescafe will soon launch Nescafe Gold Organic instant coffee at Sainsbury’s which displays the European organic logo clearly so shoppers can identify it easily as being produced organically.
As part of our investigation, we also sought information about how many companies were providing information on how they are managing the environmental impacts of their supply chains, such as carbon emission plans or helping farmers transition towards more sustainable methods of farming. Unfortunately, not all companies could provide this data, although Carte Noir, Nespresso, Lavazza, Orang Utan Grumpy Mule Cafedirect Raw Bean along with Lyons Whittard Douwe Egberts Kenco Costa all did provide some.
Nescafe was recently awarded a Green rating for this aspect of its supply chain. Now they’ve revealed their plans to work with farmers to alter how they cultivate coffee to become more environmentally sustainable, such as planting cover crops or increasing agroforestry practices. Furthermore, Nescafe plans on investing PS800 million over five years in this effort.
Is it better for the farmers?
Farmers who produce the coffee you enjoy deserve to see a fair return for their hard work, and Fairtrade and organic certification can help them do just that. By guaranteeing them at least market rate prices for their product while also providing additional social and environmental benefits that allow them to invest back into their land and communities so they can continue growing sustainably while supporting themselves and their families.
Nescafe’s goal with their Nescafe Plan 2030 is to enhance the livelihoods of coffee farmers by encouraging more to adopt regenerative agriculture practices which reduce greenhouse gas emissions while protecting biodiversity. They plan to target seven key regions which account for 90% of their coffee sourcing – Brazil, Vietnam, Mexico Colombia Cote D’Ivoire Indonesia Honduras
Farmers are being encouraged to transition to regenerative agriculture with training and technical support provided for making this switch, such as crop rotation experiments, cover crops, agroforestry techniques and replacing old coffee plants with high yielding clones that are climate change resilient.
These methods can help reduce soil erosion and improve water quality for healthier ecosystems, while increasing yield per harvest so as to help farmers increase incomes while supporting sustainable farming practices in the long term.
However, this solution hasn’t provided an instantaneous fix and many farmers still struggle. Some coffee farmers have had to resort to taking out loans at exorbitant interest rates from intermediaries due to a shortage in income from coffee sales; others have even had to abandon their farms due to diminished profitability.
Nestle is working to address these challenges by helping farmers adapt their business models and adopt cutting-edge technologies, supporting efforts of local governments to develop improved agricultural practices, protecting coffee-growing areas. Furthermore, they have joined a partnership enabling large businesses to assist suppliers in measuring and controlling emissions.
