Mushroom coffee is an everyday ritual for surfer-superstar Laird Hamilton and his friends, consisting of dark and medium roast coffee beans combined with three functional mushrooms known to possess medicinal benefits.

This blend features Peruvian Arabica coffee beans grown at high altitude, where lower oxygen levels encourage slower and denser growth, creating an exceptional taste profile. Furthermore, Chaga, Lion’s Mane and Cordyceps supplements have also been included for optimal results.

Peruvian Coffee Beans

Peru is a global leader in producing coffee. Coffee plants thrive in rich soils that encourage optimal development of high-quality beans that boast distinctive aromas and flavors. Beginning in the mid 1900s, Peruvian officials redistributed land from large plantations owners to small farmers so families could generate an income by cultivating high-grade specialty beans for sale at market. Most coffee sold today is organic certified with fair trade certification ensuring a portion of each purchase goes toward supporting social programs for Peruvian farmers.

Peru’s diverse soils give its coffee an array of unique flavors. Amazonas and Cajamarca are well-known for shade-grown coffee while Chanchamayo produces coffee with notes of chocolate and nuts. Climate also plays a part; for instance, Amazonas features cloud-forest climate which results in fruity yet brightly acidic coffee while Chanchamayo boasts dry conditions which lend their beans either nutty or citrus characteristics.

Many coffee enthusiasts appreciate how each region produces distinctively flavored beans – something known as “terroir,” which is why coffee enthusiasts typically set out on an endeavor to sample as many single-origin Peruvian coffees as possible.

Peruvian coffee beans boast distinctive flavor profiles and growing conditions that lend itself to various roasting styles, from light roasts that preserve delicate aromas to darker roasts that add fuller bodies with nutty or chocolaty notes.

Recently, Peru has seen the emergence of an unusual type of coffee made with beans collected by ring-tailed coatis animals. These animals consume the ripe coffee cherries before digesting them naturally through their digestive systems, thus neutralizing any bitterness present in them. Finally, once digested and washed thoroughly before roasting, this unique beans yield an outstanding medium body coffee with distinct taste profiles loved by connoisseurs everywhere.

Chaga mushrooms, also known as “the King of Mushrooms,” are revered for their brain-boosting and focus properties, making it an effective superfood in Eastern medicine, cuisine, as well as by athletes for high performance purposes. Packed full of antioxidants, Chaga can also be found at several high performance athlete facilities worldwide.

Chaga mushroom has long been recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties and nutritional value; it contains vitamins, minerals, protein, fiber, polyphenols, B vitamins and vitamin D in abundance. Furthermore, its beta-glucans can aid in supporting immune health.

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane mushrooms are widely known for their nerve-regenerative and anti-inflammatory properties, helping treat digestive disorders and lowering cholesterol. Furthermore, this fungus may enhance cognitive performance while simultaneously decreasing anxiety and depression levels; tea, capsules, or powder forms of Lion’s Mane may be available. Part of the Hericium family that contains several eccentric-looking varieties with flexible spines that resemble hedgehogs; its English common name being bearded tooth fungus or Hericium erinaceus in Latin.

Research has demonstrated that Lion’s Mane can offer protection from neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases. Furthermore, it may aid memory by stimulating neuron production and encouraging their growth; three small clinical trials demonstrated its promise in improving adult cognitive performance5.5

Fungi are rich sources of nutrients, such as thiamine (Vitamin B which cannot be produced by our bodies and helps the nervous system function correctly), riboflavin (an antioxidant which fights free radical damage while helping your body turn food into energy) and niacin (Vitamin B3 which aids protein and fat metabolism).

As a carnivorous predator, the Lion’s Mane consumes fish larvae and eggs as well as tiny crustaceans and jellyfish. It can be found worldwide except in Arctic and Antarctic waters.

An added benefit of eating mushrooms is their high concentration of antioxidants that can boost your immune system and decrease inflammation. Plus, they’re packed full of protein, vitamin D and potassium – so all in all it makes an ideal food source! Goji berries are packed with dietary fibre and beta-glucans that promote good gut health while decreasing cardiovascular disease and diabetes risks, making it an excellent supplement for people experiencing inflammation such as Crohn’s disease or IBS. Lion’s Mane can also make an excellent addition to any workout regime, helping with endurance and recovery. Like all functional mushrooms, Lion’s Mane may cause minor digestive upset as well as itching or rashes – as with any new supplement it is important to consult a healthcare provider first before adding it into your routine.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps fungus includes over 350 species. Of these, C. sinensis is perhaps best-known, commonly referred to in Chinese as “winter-worm summer-grass Cordyceps”. This parasitic fungus grows by attaching itself to certain insect larvae using spores released by certain types of spore-spewing insects and using tendrils clamped onto its body to kill it and grow out from within, producing fruiting bodies known as sclerotium that grow out from these dead bug bodies.

Numerous species in this genus that target subterranean insects can be found around soil surfaces or protruding out from lepidopteran pupae or other parts of plants, making it easy to locate. Pay particular attention to microhabitats where these parasites flourish – the exact location will depend on climate and environment factors.

Cultivation of Cordyceps can be challenging. First, its high levels of cordycepin are dependent on an hypoxic environment during insect hemocoel stage; artificial cultivation must replicate this condition to achieve success. Second, each fruiting body only yields three grams of sclerotium production at most. Therefore, producing Cordyceps fungus is costly to do so.

Researchers have made strides despite these challenges, however. Scientists have discovered that the growth of sclerotium depends on nitrogen, possibly accounting for why some strains are more robust than others. Furthermore, researchers have discovered ways to mitigate hypoxic conditions that inhibit Cordyceps from producing cordycepin.

Cordyceps’ rising demand has put undue strain on its fragile habitat, yet signs suggest the issue might be addressed. Guangdong Province-based Sunshine Lake Pharma has developed a technique for cultivating cordyceps in labs; studies indicate these strains contain all of the same medicinal compounds found in wild ones minus any heavy metal pollutants.

Laird Superfood’s new coffee blend features L. fructicola fungus along with chaga and Lion’s Mane mushrooms as adaptogens, designed to boost cognitive function and energy. If traditional black roast coffee is your preference, Laird also offers it!
