Trader Joe’s Acid Free Coffee
If you suffer from GERD or heartburn, drinking acid-free coffee could help. Trader Joe’s offers various solutions to reduce acidity.
Cold Brew coffee with low acidity works great alone or blended with milk. It offers a smooth finish, is mild on the palate, and contains subtle caramel notes.
Shade Grown Ground Espresso Blend
Trader Joe’s offers an impressive variety of whole bean coffee, perfect for drip, French press, espresso and cold brew brewing methods. Their vast collection of roasts, origins and even flavoring fills an extensive strip in each store’s back room – some products are better than others while some are simply terrible – the Shade Grown Ground Espresso Blend is one such instance of terrible products from Trader Joe’s.
Though advertised as having low acidity, this coffee doesn’t measure up. The beans are dark-roasted with an oily sheen. Once brewed, they taste similar to burnt wood with just the faintest traces of dark chocolate flavor; not very smooth at all despite its claimed low acidity levels.
Trader Joe’s describes this blend as an espresso blend composed of Arabica beans from Asociacion Barillense de Agricultores (ASOBAGRI) cooperative in Matagalpa, Nicaragua. ASOBAGRI serves 67 Mayan communities through 1107 active members who cultivate organic shade-grown coffee under certified Fair Trade conditions – not too bitterly roasted for optimal espresso use!
No matter whether it’s prepared via French Press or espresso, beans treated with steam are treated to remove acidity. Unfortunately, however, this has the unwanted consequence of producing coffee that tastes stale and unpleasant; some reviewers have even likened its taste to cigarettes; one YouTuber described it as tasting like drinking metallic paint!
This organic and fair trade coffee features beans that are treated to remove acidity using a patented process that is non-chemical. While not the greatest cup, this selection does provide some much needed caffeine before heading out the door! Even with its subpar quality it makes an ideal option for quick grab-and-go morning beverages before work.
Fair Trade Organic Sumatra
Trader Joe’s may be best known for its frozen foods and affordable wines and cheeses, but they also carry an impressive selection of quality coffees. Their whole bean selection is impressive while many blends feature different kinds of beans from various countries – especially its best sellers such as Organic Joe Medium Roast and Fair Trade Organic Sumatra which offer lighter roasts with reduced acidity – two excellent options to start your morning cup right.
Trader Joe’s Fair Trade Organic Sumatra coffee offers excellent low-acidity quality that combines light sweetness with milk chocolate flavor and delicate nutty aroma, all grown by Ketiara Cooperative in central Sumatra – run solely by women – making this an excellent option for pourover, drip, French press or cold brew brewers who don’t add extra sweeteners or creamers to their coffee experience.
Sumatra, located off of Western Indonesia, boasts an ideal terroir for growing coffee. Boasting high mountains and volcanic soil, Sumatra boasts low acidity coffees with notes of nutty dark chocolate that are low acid. Takengon region produces this particular organic fair trade coffee from Sumatra.
Organic Fair-Trade Breakfast Blend from Trader Joe’s offers a smooth cup with mild sweetness and mild flavors, made up of beans from Mexico, El Salvador and Honduras that come together to form this delightful cup. When cold brewed it becomes even more vibrant by pushing floral and fruity notes further up front on your palate.
Koperasi Arisarina Cooperative grows this organic and Fair Trade coffee in Sumatra’s Gayo Mountain region and it meets all relevant certification standards. Established in 2013, this cooperative comprises over 2,500 local coffee producers who share one goal – improving coffee quality while upholding sustainable farming practices while strengthening economic development for their region of Gayo Mountain.
Organic Ethiopia Guji
Trader Joe’s may be known for its affordable wine and extensive frozen food selection, but the chain also boasts an impressive variety of whole bean coffee. From single origin single estate beans to light roast blends and light roast blends Trader Joe’s offers it all!
This organic Ethiopia Guji coffee comes from Kayon Mountain Coffee Farm in Oromia Region’s Guji zone and uses natural processing techniques. With high altitude farming locations and surrounding semi-forest landscape, providing ideal conditions for coffee production; coupled with strict technical production guidelines that have helped build relationships among local farmers.
This coffee is medium-bodied with honey sweetness, floral notes and subtle orange zest notes in its finish. Though you can add creamer or sugar for added sweetness, doing so would mask its delicate flavors; enjoying it sans added sweeteners makes for an enjoyable drinking experience.
Trader Joe’s claims this coffee as the ideal daily cup, and we would agree. While not as complex in its profile as some of the other coffees we tested, it provides an enjoyable beverage suitable for taking on-the-go or enjoying with breakfast pastries.
Cold brewing this coffee proved successful, retaining all of its characteristic bean flavor even with cold water brewing. Almond milk added made this especially tasty. We found that it also makes an excellent latte using an Aeropress. Overall this is an easy coffee to prepare; although not necessarily our most delightful cup ever tried it is an excellent way to kick-start your morning!
Light Roast Coffee
Trader Joe’s offers many acid free coffee options, and this Rwandan variety is no exception. Boasting strong honey and berry flavors without much acidity compared to light roast coffees, its long finish leaves your mouth with subtle raspberry notes reminiscent of its home country. While not the top acid free pick in store, it certainly stands up as an enjoyable cold brew option that would work great as part of cold brewing routine. Also ideal for anyone experiencing GERD or heartburn as its reduced stomach acids offer relief, and with lower stomach acids than dark roast coffees it offers even less caffeine for extra boost!
While its label promises that it’s an indulgent and full-bodied blend, its reality falls a bit short. It has an abrupt opening boldness that disappoints slightly before losing some depth as time progresses. Still, the flavor profile is somewhat interesting and contains cereal notes; making this blend ideal for people who need dark roasts quickly! It doesn’t work as an effective pourover option though so consider other dark roast varieties instead for maximum pleasure.
First step to selecting the ideal type of coffee is establishing the level of acidity you can tolerate in it. From there, select which roast is right for you; light roast provides superior taste while decreasing acidity levels while medium roast will produce greater balance between taste and acidity levels.
Trader Joe’s is an eclectic chain of grocery stores originating in California and spreading throughout the US. Their stores carry an eclectic range of private label products as well as South Seas- and tiki-inspired decor, while their coffee selection may not stand out among other supermarkets; nonetheless it’s definitely worth taking a look; with dark roast and espresso blend options to suit every preference available here.
