What is Mushroom Tea Good For?
Mushroom tea has moved beyond trendy health food trends into functional and healing territory. A cup of mushroom tea contains immunity-enhancing potential that has been demonstrated to reduce stress, regulate hormones and blood pressure, boost energy levels and help detoxify the body.
Mushroom teas come in all varieties, often classified by their benefits. There are adaptogenic mushroom teas (like lion’s mane and cordyceps ) designed to ease nervous tension, support homeostasis and decrease environmental stress; energy boosting teas ( like chaga and reishi ) provide plenty of antioxidants that may also boost cognitive performance and immune support; there are even teas with mood-elevating properties (such as lion’s mane + reishi = classic combination), designed to relieve nervous tension while increasing focus, mental clarity and energy levels simultaneously.
Nature’s Rise conducted a study which demonstrated how sipping mushroom tea every morning can strengthen immune function. This finding is consistent with their longstanding use as folk remedies against colds, flu and stress levels; specifically focusing on combinations of lion’s mane, cordyceps and chaga mushrooms for this research project.
Results from this study demonstrated that participants who consumed one cup of mushroom tea per day for six weeks experienced improved immunity, reduced feelings of fatigue and stress, as well as an increase in overall energy levels. There was also a decrease in cortisol, an indicator of stress levels, as well as an increase in natural killer cells (NK Cells) within their immune systems.
Owing to these findings being in line with other studies on mushroom tea consumption, further research may still be necessary; but these preliminary results look encouraging and are in line with similar benefits seen through regular mushroom consumption. Furthermore, given how easily mushroom powder can be steeped into hot water for use as tea leaves suggest this could be an easy and straightforward way to add mushrooms into one’s diet.
When making homemade mushroom tea, grinding the mushrooms into powder before mixing with hot water is best practice. This ensures they dissolve completely and can be easily absorbed by your system – this can be accomplished using either a grinder or cutting into small pieces with a sharp knife.
Many brands of mushroom tea provide pre-mixed solutions to quickly add into boiling water. This can be an attractive option for those without time or inclination to make their own mushroom tea from scratch; Firebelly Tea sells this type of product among many others.
Mix other herbs, spices and ingredients with medicinal mushrooms for an individual experience and enhanced therapeutic properties. Try black pepper, ginseng, chai tea, cinnamon sticks, dandelion roots or cardamom for additional variety and an earthier flavor profile than might otherwise exist. This will also provide some balance to some medicinal mushroom offerings.
