Mushroom coffee, an increasingly trendy drink made from ground mushrooms mixed with coffee beans, often advertises itself as having health benefits like reduced stress and improved immunity. As a registered dietitian, I appreciate this trend but am concerned by its lack of human studies to substantiate claims or determine safety; additionally, its cost is double that of regular coffee.

Mushrooms are an abundant fungus species and can be used in medicinal teas to ease inflammation and promote healing, protein shakes and energy bars, studies have indicated they may increase cognitive function, memory retention and nerve regeneration; however, most research is conducted with animals or lab studies with few well-designed clinical trials including humans – likely explaining why there are so many unsubstantiated health claims regarding mushroom coffee on the internet (1, 2, 3).

There are various varieties of mushroom coffee available at stores. The most popular include those which combine chaga, lion’s mane and cordyceps with dark roast coffee for maximum health benefits and minimal caffeine levels. They’re easy to prepare using similar techniques as traditional coffee.

In 2022, chaga mushroom segment held a significant market share due to their adaptogenic properties that help the body adjust to stress and balance cortisol levels. Lion’s mane and reishi mushroom segments are projected to experience rapid growth – these mushrooms are known for improving mental clarity and memory while reishi is often utilized as an effective blood sugar balancer and immune booster.
