Coffee in the morning can be the ideal way to kickstart your day, but which is the better choice: tea or coffee? We consulted a dietitian from Sengkang Community Hospital (SKCH), managed by SingHealth Community Hospitals, on this matter in order to understand more of its differences between these beverages.

Coffee and tea both contain caffeine, a natural stimulant that increases alertness, improves concentration, and boosts energy levels. Although the amount of caffeine present varies significantly among different tea varieties and coffee beans, its consumption should only be taken in moderation to prevent sleeplessness, restlessness, increased heart rate, or disruption in normal sleeping patterns – thus it’s wise to select your caffeine-containing beverage carefully.

While coffee contains more caffeine than tea does, both beverages provide small amounts of other essential vitamins and minerals. If you are lacking calcium or vitamin D in your diet, adding milk or non-dairy alternative to either beverage can help meet these daily requirements. In addition, both are rich sources of antioxidants – plant compounds which may lower risk factors associated with cancer, cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

Tea contains less caffeine and acidity levels may be lower, making it suitable for those with stomach sensitivity or digestive issues. Furthermore, research shows that regular consumption can calm nerves and promote more positive physiological responses in stressful situations.

However, it’s important to keep in mind that both coffee and tea contain caffeine; therefore if you have an easily irritable stomach it may be wiser to consume in moderation. Furthermore, tea is typically drunk on either an empty or full stomach, leading to possible bloating or discomfort for some individuals.

Although both coffee and tea offer numerous health benefits, green tea contains more antioxidants than its black or white counterparts. Furthermore, both green and black teas may offer various health advantages when consumed without milk products containing extra calories, sodium, or sugar; for those watching their weight or managing diabetes this may become an issue – in such instances it would be prudent to reduce or avoid their consumption altogether.
