Chaga

Chaga is a parasitic fungal organism found on trees and contains compounds with powerful health-promoting benefits, including anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and antioxidant effects. It’s high concentration of beta glucans may support healthy blood sugar levels by inhibiting alpha-glucosidase enzyme. Chaga also contains polysaccharide inotodiol which has been found to reduce inflammation while inhibit tumor growth.

Chaga can help to restore equilibrium to the immune system, as evidenced by studies conducted with mice undergoing chemically-induced immune system overreactions. Triterpenoids present in chaga, such as inotodiol and other triterpenoids may help to balance mast cells which trigger allergic responses like itching, runny nose, sneezing and watery eyes.

Studies have demonstrated that extracts of Chaga mushroom can help maintain healthy blood sugar levels by inhibiting the enzymes alpha-glucosidase and beta-glucosidase, acting as antimicrobials, immunomodulators and possessing immunomodulatory properties. One research paper also demonstrated how chaga aqueous extracts contain components which protect liver damage caused by oxidative stress.

One study demonstrated how chaga mushroom extracts could have powerful effects on oral cancer cell metabolism by suppressing glycolysis and mitochondrial membrane potential changes, leading to decreased ATP and activation of the AMPK signaling pathway, leading to cell death via AMPK signaling pathway and activating other related pathways such as MAPK/NF-kB pathways which triggered further apoptosis of oral cancer cell lines.

Maitake

Maitake (commonly referred to as Hen of the Woods) is an ideal food, packed with low calories, sodium levels and cholesterol-free immunity-enhancing beta glucans – and an all-natural cancer fighter! Furthermore, studies indicate its benefits may help manage healthy blood sugar levels and cholesterol ratios while simultaneously supporting normalization of tumor growth by encouraging production of lymphokines and interleukins that stimulate immune health in cells.

Maitake’s key component, D-fraction beta glucan, has been found to possess strong immunomodulatory activity by increasing activation of T cells and natural killer cells as well as encouraging their production of cytokines and chemokines. Furthermore, one study demonstrated its ability to induce programmed cell death in human prostate cancer cells.

Maitake has also been shown to increase insulin sensitivity among those living with Type 2 diabetes, and could serve as a natural treatment for gastrointestinal distress (IBD). Research suggests it can decrease markers of inflammation and triggers that contribute to it in the gut. Traditional Chinese Medicine prescribes Maitake for supporting the spleen and increasing vital energy, or “qi.” When this flows freely it promotes overall health and vitality; ensure your supplements contain only high-quality maitake, made using its fruiting body without mycelium and grain contaminants for maximum benefits! To maximize your results choose supplements made using only maitake fruiting bodies without mycelium or grain contaminants for maximum effectiveness!

Turkey Tail

Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor) has long been studied as an effective functional mushroom for cancer and immune system recovery, due to its polysaccharides called PSPs which help balance both overactive and underactive immune systems as well as improve digestion and liver, lung and spleen function. Furthermore, its ability to stimulate weak immune systems without suppressing healthy cells has made this medicinal mushroom an integral component of Asian cultures (1).

Similar to other white-rot fungi, turkey tail mushrooms form a white to yellow network within decaying logs to digest and decompose their wood content, releasing its nutrients back into the soil where other plants can access them. As with other types of white-rot fungi, turkey tail mushrooms also provide shelter for fungus gnats and the horned fungus beetle which are important pollinators of some ecosystems; their fruiting bodies feature round pores with round spore-bearing pores – helping it stand out among its look-alikes which tend to pale hued. (2)

Turkey tail extracts have long been recognized for their beneficial effects on digestive health and supporting normal blood sugar levels, helping reduce oxidative stress and supporting normalized glucose levels in animal studies (3). Furthermore, studies conducted with turkey tail extracts show they may help improve insulin sensitivity as well as support improved gut health.

Turkey tail mushroom extracts may help fight some viruses. One study showed that these extracts could significantly decrease the effects of human immunodeficiency virus infection in cells by interfering with molecules essential for its replication (4).

Reishi

Reishi mushrooms (Ganoderma lucidum) have long been revered for their longevity-inducing medicinal benefits, having been found on dead trees and used medicinally since antiquity. Reishi has shown to possess anti-inflammatory, immune-stimulatory, antioxidant and hepatoprotective properties as well as many others.

Reishi benefits stem largely from its ability to stimulate white blood cell activity, essential in fighting off infections in the body. Research also indicates that it could reduce oxidative stress caused by harmful free radicals within our system.

Reishi may offer heart health practitioners some relief as studies have revealed its ability to lower LDL and triglyceride levels by increasing the ratio between good HDL cholesterol and harmful triglycerides.

Reishi can help cancer patients by strengthening their immune response and decreasing chemotherapy-related side effects, protecting livers and kidneys from cisplatin toxicity, improving quality of life for those living with cancer and improving quality of life for all those touched by disease.

Reishi mushrooms are used in our adaptogenic bravo tea 6 mushroom defense blend of ashwagandha and raw Peruvian cacao for an invigorating cocoa drink that’s suitable for adults and children alike. Each cup also includes powder and extract from Reishi to get your daily serving of this beneficial fungus, providing the ideal way to relax and unwind!

Cordyceps

Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus with long tendrils that penetrate its host’s exoskeleton to extract nourishment. After death, this process repeats itself until fruiting bodies produce fruiting bodies with spores which spread further fungi spores back out again – often known as the zombie fungus due to its ability to cause convulsions (or “zombify”) its host body. For these reasons it has long been used in Chinese traditional medicine and known as the zombie fungus due to this phenomenon.

Studies have demonstrated the many bioactivities present in natural and fermented cordyceps products, including their natural and fermented counterparts, which include antitumor, immunomodulatory, antidiabetic, hypoglycemic, antineoplastic effects. Cordyceps can also enhance exercise endurance capacity in elderly subjects by activating skeletal muscle metabolic regulators and coordinating antioxidant response responses.

Cordyceps’ unique nutritional profile may account for its therapeutic effects. Mushrooms For Life Organic Cordyceps Perform Capsules’ sinensis strain is rich in polysaccharides, amino acids and essential fatty acids as well as numerous essential minerals – an impressive source for supporting immune function and improving male reproductive health. Clinical trials have been used successfully to demonstrate this theory of action.

Cordyceps has been found safe and effective for chronic renal failure patients at doses between 3-6 g/day. It promotes renal and hepatic functions while decreasing proteinuria and hyperlipidemia in these individuals. Furthermore, its hepatoprotective benefits have been linked to increased expressions of glutathione S-transferase enzyme, glucocorticoids and polyphenols; additionally it has strong epizootic action against undesirable nematodes like Trialeurodes or Bemisia found in agricultural soils.

Lion’s Mane

Lion’s Mane mushrooms (Hericium erinaceus or Yamabushitake) have an eye-catching appearance, growing in forests throughout North America, Japan and China and featuring long white spines resembling the mane of a lion. Studies suggest this species could help promote brain health and nerve regeneration.

Hericium erinaceus extracts have been demonstrated to boost neurotrophic factor (NTF) expression, essential for nerve cell growth and survival. Bioactive compounds found within Hericium erinaceus include hericenones and erinacines that activate c-Jun N-terminal Kinase pathway neurons to produce NGF for production; therefore Lion’s Mane mushrooms could potentially help improve cognitive functions, memory retention, focus, immunity as well as overall brain health.

Hericium erinaceus has also been shown to contain anticancer properties in cancer cells. However, these tests were performed in a laboratory setting and further human subject research is necessary to draw definitive conclusions regarding its potential benefits for combatting various cancers.

Lion’s Mane supplements come in the form of capsules and tablets, tinctures and powder. Unfortunately, no recommended dosage has been established as research on its effects is limited and product potency varies by brand. Furthermore, those allergic to mushrooms should refrain from taking this supplement.
