Can I Have More Than 1 Mushroom Coffee A Day?
Mushroom coffee is a caffeine-free beverage created by blending coffee beans and medicinal mushrooms such as lion’s mane, chaga and turkey tail together in a blended beverage. Studies on medicinal mushrooms have highlighted their possible health benefits including stress relief and improved mental focus; yet its success remains to be determined.
Though mushroom coffee shouldn’t harm you, be aware that many of its purported benefits have yet to be proven. Furthermore, those who suffer from mushroom allergies, digestive issues or are taking blood thinners should avoid it; additionally it isn’t advised for children, pregnant women, or those with high blood pressure.
Many brands of mushroom coffee on the market vary in price, source and quality. Some use only organic or shade-grown beans; others are sugar free or vegan/kosher/halal; still others contain probiotics for digestive support or Irritable Bowel Syndrome relief; it’s important to read labels and make an informed purchase decision.
Most mushroom coffee blends contain approximately half the caffeine found in regular coffee, making them an excellent way to lower or eliminate their caffeine consumption. But pregnant women or those taking other dietary supplements should consult their doctor prior to incorporating this option into their daily routines.
Coffee typically uses several common mushrooms such as chaga, reishi, lion’s mane and cordyceps for their anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing effects. Turmeric, licorice root and black pepper may also be added for extra flavour.
Though some may experience a soothing, “feel-good” effect from drinking mushroom coffee, this effect may not necessarily be due to the mushrooms themselves. These beverages do not contain psilocybin-laden “magic mushrooms,” known for altering your perception of reality, unlike adaptogens found in mushroom coffee which may help alleviate stress and anxiety.
Mushrooms are an excellent source of vitamin B2, which helps fight fatigue, and folate (used to treat anemia and promote healthy nutrient absorption). Furthermore, mushrooms contain zinc for fighting infections while fighting depression and anxiety.
Mushroom coffee may be more costly than its coffee counterpart and has yet to be thoroughly studied for effectiveness, so it may be best to opt for whole mushrooms as these contain numerous health benefits.
