Ganoderma lucidum, more commonly known as the ‘big black Lingzhi Mushroom’ or “reishi,” has been reported to possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-enhancing properties. Additionally, it helps improve circulation while simultaneously lowering blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well as providing relief from rheumatic arthritis symptoms.

G. lucidum ethanol extract was shown to significantly reduce neointimal thickening following carotid artery-ligation in mouse models, possibly attributable to its triterpenoid compounds and polysaccharides (Wachtel-Galor et al. 2004b).

These fungi produce fruit bodies composed of lignicolous, leathery or woody material and grow in fan or hoof-like shapes. Solitary or colonial growth patterns exist; double-walled basidiospores with yellow to brown ornamented inner layers can produce root rot in cacao trees, coffee beans and rubber trees while some species can even be used medicinally.

Reishi fruiting bodies contain high concentrations of germanium, an antimutagenic and antioxidant mineral with antihepatotoxic and immunomodulatory properties.
