How Many Cups of Coffee is Healthy?
Coffee is a beloved morning drink for many, a ritual that helps improve productivity and sets off their day on an inspiring note. Coffee also boasts numerous health benefits that reduce risk factors like heart disease, cancer and depression – this may be attributed to non-caffeine ingredients like antioxidants or combinations of phytochemicals in its ingredients; too much caffeine consumption however can lead to overstimulation and insomnia; research has proven that moderate consumption between two to five cups per day is actually beneficial to overall health.
Studies published by the New England Journal of Medicine in 2022 concluded that drinking two to three cups daily of coffee significantly decreases heart disease mortality risk and is associated with reduced incidences of abnormal heart rhythms. Researchers collected data from 449,563 adults regarding how much coffee they drank daily and then divided these individuals into six categories: those who never consumed coffee; no more than one cup per day consumed; one cup daily; two to four cup per day consumers and those consuming over five cups a day.
People who drank more cups of coffee were linked with lower risks of heart disease and longer lives than those who consumed two or less per day, similar to when looking at all causes of mortality; those drinking over three cups per day showed greater reduction in risk than those who consumed less coffee per day.
However, it should be remembered that these studies were observational; therefore they only showed an association between coffee drinking and reduced disease risks and its reduced likelihood. Therefore, for optimal health it remains vital to maintain a well-rounded diet in order to live a long and fulfilling life.
Experts advise limiting coffee intake to 400 milligrams of caffeine daily; this limit has been established by most governments and health organizations and will help to avoid some of its adverse side effects, including anxiety and insomnia. Milk or sugar-sweetened beverages increase calorie counts significantly; consider substituting with oat or almond milk instead as lower-cal alternatives with which you can still enjoy coffee without negatively affecting your health. Also look for single origin or organic beans which contain more antioxidants.
