How to Drink My Coffee Healthy
Coffee has long been part of daily rituals around the globe and helps millions to wake up and get going each morning. More studies have also indicated its potential health benefits.
Coffee is known to contain powerful antioxidants, while when prepared properly it can even contain beneficial bacteria that help enhance immunity and strengthen our bodies’ defenses. With all its positive health effects, researchers continue to unearth more evidence supporting coffee’s beneficial properties for human wellbeing.
But unfortunately, many of us aren’t drinking coffee in an optimally nutritious manner. If we add sugar and cream to our cups, they can become filled with empty calories and saturated fats that could compromise its benefits for health. So how can we enjoy this delectable beverage while keeping it as healthful as possible?
One simple way to enjoy healthier coffee drinking habits is omitting all forms of added sugars from your beverage, such as cane sugar. Too much added sugar increases your risk of dental issues like tooth decay and cavities. Instead, try sweeteners such as Stevia or honey (both available at most grocery stores and natural foods stores), or add cinnamon for flavoring and added health benefits: cinnamon contains antioxidants which may help control blood sugar levels and help control your blood pressure levels.
Sugar should also be measured out to ensure you do not use too much. Also, if you are an occasional coffee drinker who has gone a few days without caffeine consumption, gradually transition back into it gradually to reduce chances of caffeine crashes and withdrawal symptoms.
If you need milk in your coffee, skim milk may be best as it contains less fat and calories than whole milk. Be mindful to only use small amounts so that you still benefit from all its beneficial nutrients in each glass of java!
No matter if you drink it black or with milk and sugar, it is always advisable to rinse your mouth with water after every cup of coffee you consume in order to avoid plaque build-up and tooth decay. Furthermore, it is advisable not to consume more than three cups in one day as too much can increase heart rate and lead to anxiety or restlessness. Alternatively, green tea offers many of the same health benefits without caffeine consumption.
