How to Make a Healthy Coffee Smoothie
A coffee smoothie makes an ideal breakfast on-the-go, packed with protein and fruits and vegetables that provide essential vitamins (C and K in particular), minerals, folate and fibre. Plus it tastes just like your local coffee shop’s tempting frappuccino–but is much healthier, wallet friendly and gives you greater control of its strength and sweetness!
If you’re following a restricted diet, this coffee smoothie can easily be modified with dairy free milk, oats or coconut milk as alternatives to traditional cow’s milk for a reduced-calorie and carbs option. Add collagen or protein powder for an additional dose of protein and healthy fats; and feel free to substitute the banana with avocado or pear as fruit if preferred!
This recipe uses instant coffee combined with cold water; however, you could easily substitute one cup of regular or decaffeinated brewed and cooled coffee instead. Plant milk should also be added along with any desired ingredients like oatmeal, leafy greens, cocoa powder and sweetener to complete this smoothie recipe.
For intermittent fasting, you might try switching out banana for some chia seeds or peanut butter to provide more protein and high quality fats that will help balance out your breakfast to ensure optimal blood glucose levels while also preventing spikes in ghrelin hormone levels that could otherwise lead to hunger and overeating.
Other optional ingredients to try: A handful of leafy greens for calcium, potassium and folate is easily added by switching out the banana with some frozen spinach or kale spoonfuls; cocoa powder for chocolatey taste and antioxidant benefits is mixed with cocoa butter to create the chocolatey experience, maple syrup or honey for sweetness as well as pinch of cinnamon to round off all of these flavors; for an added protein, creaminess and fat boost any creamy nut butter will do (any variety will do!).
