How to Sweeten Coffee in a Healthy Way
No matter your goal of eliminating sugar from your diet or simply switching to less-processed alternatives, there are numerous natural sweeteners to help give your coffee an irresistibly delicious kick without all the added calories. Honey, maple syrup, molasses and even cinnamon all offer delicious natural alternatives; just remember they still contain calories so use with caution.
Many nutritionists and health experts have recommended using natural sweeteners such as stevia or monk fruit to sweeten beverages such as coffee. These natural alternatives don’t contain aspartame which has caused controversy with artificial sweeteners. Plus they provide similar tastes with reduced calories. Stevia or monk fruit drops can be purchased either in powder form or drop form for ease of use!
Option three is using plant-based milks such as almond, coconut or oat that provide natural sweetness and creamy texture that make coffee taste richer. Plus, these dairy alternatives often lack artificial additives and preservatives – making them healthier choices for those watching their diet.
Some individuals find it easier to switch from sugar to natural sweeteners gradually than completely eliminate it from their diets. If this applies to you, try gradually decreasing the amount of sugar you are eating while gradually adding in natural sweeteners to see which works best with your taste buds and give yourself time to experiment until finding what makes the ideal combination.
Add some salt to your coffee to help counteract its bitterness and make it more pleasurable to drink, particularly if you drink black or decaffeinated coffee which can often be quite strong-tasting on its own. This step may especially benefit those drinking black or decaf coffee as this step will soften its harsher flavors.
Use fruits as another natural way to sweeten your coffee by adding fresh or frozen fruit, or readymade fruit puree available at many supermarkets, into your drink. Just be sure to read labels closely so as to purchase products which contain only minimal levels of added sugars and artificial sweeteners.
Additionally, adding a small pinch of salt can also help decrease its bitterness, particularly useful if you prefer black or decaffeinated iced coffee as this will bring out its flavors.
Finally, add some pure maple syrup or molasses to your coffee for a natural sweetener that adds subtle sweetness while providing additional nutrients, minerals, and antioxidants. They dissolve well both hot and iced coffee making them convenient additions to your daily routine – you could even experiment with various varieties to see which you enjoy most!
