Is Bulletproof Coffee Healthy?
Bulletproof coffee has quickly become the latest health trend sweeping social media, boasting millions of Instagram posts as its popularity spreads. This drink consists of hot black coffee mixed with butter or grass-fed ghee (grassfed butter from grass-fed cows) or MCT oil extracted from coconuts; often combined with additional ingredients like grass-fed ghee or MCT oil from coconuts). Hailed by many as the ultimate energy drink, celebrities like Shailene Woodley and Harry Styles endorse its consumption; both use its fat and caffeine components to stay focused throughout their days!
But is this trending drink truly nutritious, and if so why?
Many keto brew recipes call for collagen or protein powder, which can add extra calories and sugars, along with nuts for additional fat, or histamine-inducing dairy products like ghee that may not be suitable for those who suffer from histamine intolerance. Furthermore, the addition of regular or stevia-based sweeteners changes its nutritional profile and may affect ketosis for those on a ketogenic diet.
MCT oils in this drink are processed by your liver into energy, helping your body burn fat for energy – which could potentially aid weight loss. They’re also an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids which reduce inflammation and may improve cognitive function – with their high fat content also offering satiety to promote feelings of fullness.
Caffeine in drinks increases alertness and may help improve physical exercise performance by decreasing fatigue and muscle soreness, increasing metabolism, and stimulating release of hormones that suppress hunger. But too much caffeine may have adverse side effects such as insomnia and nervousness – therefore moderation should always be observed.
MCT oil in this drink provides essential omega-3 fatty acids to combat inflammation, while ghee is rich in unsaturated fats which may lower cholesterol and help protect against heart disease. Unfortunately, however, any added dairy may pose problems for those who are lactose intolerant.
Even though having a coffee based drink first thing in the morning can provide an instant energy boost, its high fat and caloric intake could leave you feeling full before lunch time if this beverage were to replace breakfast or lunch. Furthermore, drinking such beverages could cause dehydration later in the day which should also be taken into consideration.
When not following a ketogenic diet, consuming MCT oils and saturated fats from their drink could be counterproductive as your body will already be burning its stored fat for energy. Furthermore, taking coffee on an empty stomach could cause nausea or digestive issues.
