Is Coffee Healthy?
Coffee is enjoyed by millions worldwide and often seen as a vital beverage, yet its health implications are much-debated. While one study suggests it can kill you, another says it prolongs life. As with anything, much depends on the quantity and type of coffee consumed – caffeine’s presence helps elevate energy levels and cognitive function, but coffee also contains many other beneficial vitamins and antioxidants making it a nutritious beverage when taken in moderation.
Roasted coffee berry pods are ground into an aromatic beverage to be enjoyed hot or cold. Roasting method and ingredients determine both its taste and health benefits; most commonly used beans include arabica and robusta varieties containing numerous biologically active compounds beyond caffeine that help reduce inflammation, improve insulin sensitivity, suppress fat absorption, inhibit abnormal heart rhythms and more. Furthermore, coffee may help increase memory retention, mood improvement and alertness levels.
One factor behind this can be linked to caffeine’s effect on blocking receptors for the sedating chemical adenosine in your brain, keeping you awake by increasing activity from other neurotransmitters such as dopamine. Furthermore, recent research indicates that those who drink four cups of coffee a day are 33% less likely to develop multiple sclerosis, an incapacitating neurological condition; perhaps because coffee helps protect nerves against damage caused by inflammation proteins present in this disease.
According to one study, drinking two to three cups of coffee daily may reduce your risk of skin cancer by 50%. It may be because chlorogenic acid found in coffee brew can interfere with COX-2 enzyme expression, thus stopping production of certain inflammatory chemicals which promote growth of melanomas cells.
Studies have linked coffee consumption with reduced rates of cardiovascular disease, including lower rates of stroke and heart attack. While this could be related to its polyphenols content, coffee could also help to manage blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol.
Notably, however, all these benefits are based on population data and do not guarantee cause and effect relationships. Furthermore, some individuals may experience negative side effects such as trouble sleeping, jitteriness and stomach issues such as acid reflux or heartburn when drinking coffee for the first time or increasing consumption. It is wise to speak to your physician prior to increasing or beginning consumption; they can help ensure you find a balance that suits your personal needs.
