Is Decaf Coffee Halal?
Coffee was once considered forbidden under Islamic law due to its mild stimulant properties; however, Islamic leaders eventually realized that caffeine did not lead to intoxication or drunkenness and reclassified it as halal beverage; consumers now regard coffee as an effective way of staying focused during work as well as important Islamic events and celebrations.
Dunkin’ Donuts may not be certified halal, but many of their locations do provide halal-friendly options. You can refer to each location’s menu or visit their website for specifics about what options may be available in each location and brand of energy drinks (Red Bull is considered halal while other may contain ingredients not suitable for consumption).
McDonald’s decaf coffee is made using carefully selected Arabica beans and uses a process known as Swiss Water to extract caffeine without using chemicals or alcohol, earning certification by the Orthodox Rabbinical Council of British Columbia (BC Kosher). Ethyl acetate used in this process comes from sugarcane grown locally at lower elevations than coffee; Descafecol, Sucroal’s Halal Certification Organization verifies it is food grade, kosher and halal certified.
